Desert Moon Hotel & RV Park

Just off Interstate 70 in Thompson, Desert Moon Hotel & RV Park occupies a compact area with about 10 RV spots offering full hookups and roughly six tent sites. The facility accommodates RVs up to 50 feet with electric, water, and sewer connections available. Train tracks run nearby, providing occasional locomotive sounds that punctuate the high desert quiet.

The campground maintains a distinctly informal atmosphere that draws mixed reactions from visitors. Some tent sites consist of small dirt patches without traditional amenities like fire rings or picnic tables, requiring campers to share space with their vehicles. RV rates run around $60 per night while tent camping costs approximately $25-30. Jesse B. found "clean, flushing toilets, decent shower, right by the beautiful mountains and train tracks."

The property features both outdoor restroom facilities and indoor shower access, though cleanliness standards vary according to different visitor experiences. Several long-term residents occupy spots throughout the year, contributing to the campground's lived-in character. Campers seeking alternatives can explore places to camp near Thompson or check nearby options like Ballard RV Park.

Reservations help secure spots, though walk-ins can sometimes arrange morning check-ins for late arrivals.

Many campers appreciated the friendly owners and affordable rates, though facility conditions vary significantly. Several guests reported problems with tiny tent sites and bathroom cleanliness issues that affected their stay.

Great Little Oasis

If you're looking for a new, sterile KOA, keep going. If you're looking for a unique, well appointed, affordable spot owned and occupied by really great creative people, stay here! I liked it so much I stayed an entra week.

Do not stay here

Staying here was a huge mistake… for a few reasons.

The tent sites are TINY and just a patch of dirt. Our fire ring was almost completely rusted through and the sites are so close to each other it’s pretty uncomfortable to have a fire.

The entire area smelled like sewage. It was disgusting and we considered packing up and just driving through the night to our next destination.

We only decided to stay in an established campground because we saw they had showers and a bathroom… both were so disgusting we decided to leave and use the gas station bathroom the next day as early as possible.

The biggest waste of $30. You’re better off camping for free in the surrounding area because the benefit of facilities isn’t here.

Old funky hippie hideout

This is a very small about 10 RV spots with full hookups and about 6 tent sites. $60 night RV, $25 tents. Area is old, run down and funky...looks like most spots are long-term types. If you like funky, this is your place.

Interesting to say the least

We stayed here September 2020.

Boy was this place interesting. The tent sites were just tiny plots of land, no fire ring or picnic table and you had to fit your car into the same space as your tent. The neighboring tent was very close to us.

The bathroom is a stand-alone outdoor building. It was covered in moths, like 50+ moths. Whenever you entered with a light they would wake up and start fluttering all over the place, especially going toward your flashlight so it was quite terrifying.

When we asked about showers the owner told us that we could use the restroom inside. We were heading toward the indoor restroom (for which you have to enter the house and walk through the laundry room), and another woman stopped us and told us that it wasn’t available for campers. We explained that the male who welcomed us told us we could, so then she was okay with us going in. Odd. The restroom is small and very dirty considering it is a house bathroom. We were too sketched out to shower so we only used the sink to brush our teeth and avoid the moth-filled outdoor bathroom.

There was some kind of covered patio with lights where people were hootin and hollering as the sun was setting. So not really a quiet place.

The place seemed like a hippie meetup and just wasn’t our vibe.

Friendly, Nice, Clean, Easy

$25 for a tent, I think $30-40 for an RV depending on what you need. Clean, flushing toilets, decent shower, right by the beautiful mountains and train tracks. Great place to stay on a road trip. Owner super nice. Try to reserve in advance, but you can come late and settle in the morning just fine.
