Salt Valley Dispersed Camping

Bureau of Land Management's Moab Field Office oversees Salt Valley Dispersed Camping, where free camping spreads across multiple sites accessible via Salt Valley Road. This walk-in dispersed area sits on BLM land adjacent to Arches National Park, with campers accessing sites by parking along the road and walking to their chosen spots.

The area provides numerous site options at different elevations, from easily accessible spots near the road to more remote locations requiring high-clearance vehicles. Campers with standard vehicles can reach several sites, while those with 4WD capability can access elevated positions on hilltops that offer greater isolation. The terrain includes both flat areas behind hills and rim locations, with existing stone fire pits at some sites and dry firewood available in the area.

Road conditions vary significantly depending on how far campers venture from the main access point. The initial stretch accommodates most vehicles, but conditions deteriorate further up the road where sand and steep, bumpy sections with sharp turns challenge larger rigs. One reviewer broke a leaf spring attempting the route in a fifth wheel, though they noted the large, flat mesa at the top provided ample space once reached.

Cell service remains limited with spotty AT&T coverage reported. Wildlife sightings include coyotes and antelope in the area. For campers seeking developed amenities, BLM North Klondike Bluffs Campground offers a more structured alternative.

Campers regularly cited flat sites with stunning views and peaceful isolation. Access roads can be challenging for larger RVs, but most vehicles find suitable spots.

Underrated spot

Surprised this spot isn’t more popular. Lots of nice remote site options and trail leads you right into Arches NP (dont forget parks pass unless government is still shut down) with some fun off roading trails for capable vehicles but did see some motorcycles struggling in some sand farther up the road. I didn’t see anyone else camping here and saw maybe three OHVs drive past in the distance but was super quiet and peaceful otherwise. I will definitely stay here again next time I’m in Moab.

Great dispersed camping

There are some great spots that can be reached by most trailers/vans/cars. If you have high clearance and 4WD, there are fantastic spots on top of the hills that will keep you isolated.

Nice views

Had run of the place. We were the only ones there. Camped right on the rim. Limited AT&T service

Rough road but worth it!

There are few pull offs and lots of signs for roads closed but I drove a little bit further than where there is a turn around at the top and it was gorgeous!

NOT for bigger rigs!

We knew better. Should not have been on that road in our fifth wheel. No turnarounds once we started on a steep, bumpy road with sharp turns. Broke a leaf spring and limped to the large, flat Mesa up top; waited for repair guy. Plenty of room up there, gorgeous! Just not for bigger rigs.

One of the best campsites I’ve ever found.

I drove through Arches National Park on Salt Valley Road, until it exited the park onto BLM Land. Took an immediate right and followed the fence of the park. The campsite is hidden behind a hill and is flat, with an existing stone fire pit. Plenty of dry firewood laying around and coyotes and antelope all around!
