Bridger-Teton National Forest

Sheffield Campground is located in the northeast corner of the Buffalo Ranger District, just outside of the John D. Rockefeller Parkway. Heading north on Highway 191 to Yellowstone, take a right onto the Forest Service dirt road before you get to the Snake River Bridge just before Flagg Ranch. The campground sits just outside of the Teton Wilderness. This location is equipped with 5 campsites, a single-unit vault toilet, access to bear boxes, and campfire rings. Nearby, visitors can access the wilderness via Sheffield Trailhead which provides access to the historic Huckleberry Lookout.

Directions

Starting from Moran, Wyoming (located 27 miles south of Yellowstone National Park’s south entrance and 19 miles north of the Town of Moose, Wyoming), head west on United States (US) Highway 26/287 for approximately 0.2 miles. Turn right onto US 89/191/287, following said road for approximately 24 miles. Make a right onto Forest Service Road 30504 and continue on for 0.5 miles. Sheffield Campground is located on the left. Approximate travel details from Moran: 25 miles, 39 minutes.

Beautiful and quiet night

Stayed here to be closer to Yellowstone’s south entrance but avoid the crowds. It’s a beautiful place - pristine single toilet, extremely friendly camp host, horses, nice neighbors and a pretty night sky. We arrived around 1pm on a summer Sunday night and got one of the last two spots in this small campground. About an hour into the heart of the park. Just beware of construction on the road further north (as of July 2023)

Small but pretty

This is one of this small special places, very friendly stuff, clean pit toilet and nice hiking area. Perfect cheap and not crowded place to explore Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. We loved this place

Great Stay

We luckily found this gem of a campsite after looking in Yellowstone all day, we didn’t get here until later in the afternoon so I was very thankful to finally have somewhere to put up the tent. The camp host was so kind, we stayed in site #11 which is near the creek and by horses the trail riding place occasionally keeps there. My daughter loved petting the horses. Perfect spot between both parks, and we went and played in Snake River which the kids also loved. Gas station not far in case you need last minute things. Definitely recommend!

Get here while you still can

Arrived late morning around 11:30. There were only 3 occupied spots so we had our pick of some great campsites. We had the place to ourselves until people started rolling in around 2. There is fairly nice space between campsites. Each one has a table, fire ring, and table. The sites are pretty large and level. We parked a 24’ sprinter no problem. We talked with the horse riding company just off the entrance and learned the bridge over the creek as you enter the campground is being removed. The banks to the creek would be too steep for vehicles to cross. Hope the bridge/creek get figured out because this is a special little spot.

A nice spot near yellowstone!

This spot was very nice, camping attendant was very nice and got us settled in. We got there around 5pm and grabbed the last spot for the night. Nice horse spaces too! We enjoyed our little nook in the woods and zipped up to Yellowstone quickly

Close to south entrance

Very close to the south entrance of Yellowstone and close to the entrance of Grant Teton. Great spot for visiting both parks!

Perfect location near yellowstone

We stayed here 1 night and it was perfect for waking up early and going to Yellowstone. With only being a few miles from the south entrance, it made easy for an early start. We tried staying here a second night but by 9pm all spots were full. We did find out from a local that you are able to stay at the headwaters restaurant parking lot for the night if you are car camping. We ended up doing this our second night and had no issues.

Best Kept Secret

This little campground is amazing. Very limited capacity (12 sites), and away from any busy or thru roads. Bathroom is a single, unisex, and was clean and well-kept. Crossing Box Creek to get to the campground just adds to the uniqueness of this little gem. We rolled in late, got spot #8 as it was the only one available. This site has next to no trees for shade (which makes tent camping hot) nor does #6, but the rest do. But the perk of our site was the huge wildflower field we had as a yard to the east, probably 200 yards from the forest tree line....my dog was in heaven. Saw a Momma Moose there and one calf. The mountain view of Box Peak is amazing too as the sun comes up over the east ridge. Made for great sunrises. Highly advise serious tent and small trailers/campers, to check this place out! It does welcome motor homes and big trailers too, but the dirt road to the campground is already narrow as is for medium sized campers and quickly becomes a one lane road - so be forewarned. For $10 a night, right between Teton and Yellowstone National Parks is a STEAL! No reservations needed either. First come, first serve. 11 AM is when sites open from those leaving. Good time to find the best spot is 11 to 2 or 3 (early afternoon). Good luck and leave no trace!

Perfection Between the Parks

If I could give this site 10 stars I would.

I lucked out and got spot 12 (if it is available, go for it). The spot was the perfect mix of public and private. Meaning that I felt totally comfortable changing without people seeing me and didn't overhear anyone else, but didn't feel so isolated that if a bear attacked me no one would know. Right next to the trailhead. A personal path down to the river. The sound of water flowing at night. SO MUCH FIREWOOD. I had three bundles of wood I had bought and literally didn't have to use a single log of my own- there's so much wood around that burns amazingly. I had the best fire of my entire road trip so far there and didn't even have to use my own wood. Each site has a firepit and picnic table. Some sites have bear boxes. The main loop has about six sites that are more exposed and on top of each other, but sites 11 and 12 are heaven. If you have horses, definitely go for site 11 or 12. There's one vault toilet. No frills. Only $10 and you are located directly between the parks. It was a great landing spot as I transitioned from the tetons to Yellowstone. Neighbors were all extremely friendly.

Cons:

- road in is very short and relatively safe, but there is one river crossing that if there was a heavy rain or snowmelt, I am not sure how passable it would be. I crossed in my subaru outback without issue but was slightly nervous and had to take it slow.

- my neighbors told me that people tend to arrive later in the day and kind of push it when it comes to the ethics and boundaries of camping. I had set up camp (tent, chair, etc) around 11am and then headed into Yellowstone. When I returned back around 7pm, my neighbors told me they had to tell multiple people not to try and camp in my spot, even though my stuff was clearly visible and my name was marked on the signpost. They had a similar issue with a campervan literally pulling up between their RV and their Horse trailer and try to park and camp there late at night. They had to put up a rope blocking off the entry to their site due to this. They had been camping there for 30 years and explained that the sites further back (11, 12) are relatively new, but since there are such few sites and they often serve as overflow for people who couldn't get a spot in the parks, people try and park and camp where they shouldn't.

How can you complain with this price?!

For $10 this place is simply great. Most sites come with a bear box and it’s a really neat road getting in! We pulled in to set up camp the night before we got into Yellowstone and it worked out really well. For $10 this was the best campground I have ever had.

Amazing!

Fantastic site! Lays in the valley of the Forrest, by a creek. Stars are amazing and wildlife is there if you look hard enough! We had a wolf stalking a badger 100yds from our tent!

National Forest Camping Between YellowStone and Grand Teton

This is a nice little hidden gem between two major National Parks so we were excited to have a spot here! Basic National Forest camping, no water on-site, basic vault toilet, bear box, table, and fire ring. It was $10 per night First Come First Serve. Get there early because there are only a handful of sites (10 I believe). If you go past this spot there are a few spots near a horse trailhead.

Just what we needed

Perfect campground if you plan on visiting both parks. It's quiet, bug free and located close to a creek so you can soak your sore feet after a long days hike. Only draw back is, there's limited shade on most camp sites, but fill your day with activities and you won't need to worry about it.

Great location!

If you don't want to be in a huge campsite in the National Parks give this place a try. Nothing too special but is a nice spot to get away from the crowds. They do have food storage available and toilets, dogs are allowed. Easy access to both Yellowstone and Teton! When the park campgrounds were full, this spot was still available!

Hidden little Jem

This is a great little campground with only a few sites (5 I think) just south of Yellowstone. We were here just to fly fish the Snake River for a couple of hours (make sure you have all the right fishing permits for Yellowstone and Wyoming!). Clean vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits, plus bear proof storage containers.

Looked great!

5 nice sites all first come first serve. Right outside the south entrance to Yellowstone. No real amenities, a simple valet toilet. Great spot since no one really seems to think to stop here. This is bear country, use some form of bear food storage! Was actually asked to leave earlier than anticipated by the rangers because there was excessive bear activity in the area.

Great Stop in between Yellowstone and Tetons

This little campground has 5 paid sites and is off of Forest Road 30504. You have to cross the creek to get there but it wasn't a bad crossing when were were there in mid-June. I would imagine if they had been getting a lot of rain it would have been more difficult. The campsites are pretty dispersed and each have a table, fire pit, and food storage container because this is a "bear-aware" area. There was one vault toilet for the campground. You could just make out the tops of the Tetons from our site and it was in a pretty pasture area with lots of trees and rolling hills. I would definitely stay here again.
