Perfect Location

We tent camped here and we absolutely loved this campground. I can't remember what site we were in as they are assigned when you check in, but our spot was near the bathroom, but still very private. We walked down to the bay and did the trail down there in the morning and it was absolutely breath taking, but a little scary since there had been bear activity in the area.

We just made sure to take our bear spray and made some noise while hiking.

The site was great, good tent pad, nice fire pit and table and a bear box as well.

The bathrooms were very clean and the grounds were well kept.

Being right in the park was great for easy access to Grand Teton and getting an early start.

Nice sites and great location

We stayed for 3 nights and our site was great. Roomier than other NPS campgrounds, trees for shade, and flush toilets. The nearby camp store is well stocked and the laundry and showers were really nice too. Love that you can walk to the lakeshore from The campgrounds. We saw a bald eagle on the lakeshore trail too! We would definitely stay again!

Great location, easy camping

Sites are close but plenty of trees around for privacy. Bathrooms are flush with running water. Paid showers and laundry by visitors center. Great food in restaurant by the visitor center and a pizzeria. Great Wi-Fi in restaurant area.

Lot said they were full but we got a spot night of and arrived around 6pm. Saw some open spots the next morning for hikers/bikers so if you’re stuck and it’s late I’d ask about those if they say they are full.

Bears in area so you need to use the bear box. Nice picnic table and fire ring too!

Review for Hikers and Cyclists

For cyclists and hikers … Colter Bay campground does have a hiker/biker campsite. ~$15/night.

There are lots of pitches, with food storage, picnic tables and fire pits. No charging facilities, but I discreetly charged a power pack at night in the toilet block. Full facilities here, including showers for $5, laundry, cafe/restaurant and a really good and large grocery store. If you are coming from Yellowstone you’ll notice that the price of groceries here is back to normal levels for the USA, compared to the grocery stores in Yellowstone, which as we say in the UK, are taking the Micky (that’s the polite version!)

Large campground

Large campground with convenient and well stocked but over priced grocery store. My biggest problem with this campground is there only one place to shower. There is bathrooms at each loop but no shower and no dish washing station. Also the show house closes at 9pm and cost $5. Which I guess is common (having to pay) at campgrounds in national parks. Not my favorite place but I will add that there is a large amount of room between camp sites .

Bathroom lights blaze all night long here-- tenters beware

A tenter's perspective.

This is a campground of uneven quality. Many sites are well taken care of and others are totally unkempt. Others are subject to the bright lights of bathrooms which blaze all night long. It seems as though GTNP has not taken the Dark Sky Program to heart.

If you are located within view of a bathroom, then prepare for a nighttime nuisance if you camp in a tent.

Less than half of the sites are truly good ones for tent campers. For example in loop E which is supposed to be for tents I would rate as "Good" sites 110, 113, 118, 123, & 125; "Very Good" Sites 116 & 117. Others are either uneven, weedy, or close enough to a bathroom to be annoying at night. Some are exceptionally cramped..

Starting with the bathroom problem: These sites in loops A-G are affected by all night light pollution-#4, 23, 25, 26, 27, 36, 45, 46,, 47, 76, 77, 78,79, 83, 84, 85, 86, 95, 96, 99,111, 112, 120, 121, 141, 142, 143, 147, 148…and many more.

On the F & G loops on the hill, for tents, the F loop is compromised by tall Verizon towers directly in the center of the loop. See photo. The G loop is less impacted and best sites there are 140, 146, 149. The C loop has not been examined because it is so tightly packed that I wouldn't want to camp there.

I also would not camp in the upper loops which have serious maintenance issues.

That said, the trees are wonderful and the adjacent village has nearly everything one needs including showers and a laundromat. And, of course, Jackson Lake. We spent four days here.

Hosts are personable.

Amazing place to spend a week!

We camped at Colter Bay the last week of May into the first of June. While the campgrounds had plenty of RVs in it, we camped in our tent. The campgrounds in general has a ton of trees, so even though our next door neighbors were in a big RV, we couldn’t even see them from our tent. We couldn’t even see our minivan. Another benefit to the trees was cover from the wind - when we camped here, the nighttime temperatures were in the 30s. Not having to deal with the wind made it more bearable.

The loops are single-lane, one-way roads and are simple enough to navigate. Each loop has its own bathroom facility, and the bathroom facilities are close enough to each other that in the rare event yours is full, the next one down is only a short walk away. The camp store is amazingly well stocked, it’s practically a miniature grocery store with a lot of different items. You can even get ice cream there, and it has a gift shop attached that is equally well stocked with a wide variety of gifts. Even more amazing, there’s no need to worry if you forget that crucial bit of camping or hiking gear - the gift shop also had a pretty good selection of gear available.

Also in the Colter Bay Area was a pair of restaurants that had a nice, cozy summer camp kind of feel to them, and their availability was nice especially on the nights we were too tired from hiking to cook. The only “down side” I would say is that the shower facility was next to the camp store and not more central to the camp site loops, but it had great water pressure and nice, hot water so it was a nice way to cap your day of hiking with a hot shower and a hot meal at the restaurant.

Overall, the campgrounds were exceptionally clean, easy to navigate, well-supplied, and staffed with friendly people. I would absolutely camp here again, and I highly recommend it.

Beautiful Scenery, Convenient Campground

We camped in Colter Bay Campground on Tuesday, August 25. Check in was easy, and the campground is very big on bear safety, seeing as there's at least one bear in the campground every day, but we never encountered one and followed all their safety precautions. There wasn't a ton of privacy at our site, but once it was dark it didn't matter much that our neighbors in the loop were all close at hand. Bathrooms were extremely conveniently placed, and there was even a room with a large, toilet-like sink where you could rinse your dishes. The lake and and pebble beach were a very short walk from our loop, and it was some of the most beautiful scenery we saw on our three-week roadtrip. The mountains were gorgeous and snow-topped, and the lake was clearer than any water I've ever seen before. My only regret is that we only had one night here, and I'm sure exploring the area would have been magnificent.

Just Fantastic

After almost 10 back to back individual nights at campgrounds, it was nice to be able to have two back to back nights in a tent cabin.  The cabins are great with two wood walls, two canvas tent walls and roof, four drop down bunks and a nice potbelly stove.  The outside area is very nice with a table, fire ring and bear box.  Parking for the tent was directly next to the cabin and outdoor pad.

The only drawback is that the tent cabins are quite close to each other.  The family in the tent next to mine was very nice, but also quite loud.  The area luckily was quiet after 10pm.

The campground village itself was very nice, with all sorts of shopping and food options.  Since I arrived at the campground around 4pm I quickly unloaded my gear into the cabin. Instead of cooking I grabbed a bite to eat and a six pack of local beer, and headed over to a spot on Jackson Lake to have a sunset dinner.  The campground location is perfect to get out and explore.

The cabin bunks are comfortable, if not a bit loud when sleeping and moving around.  I woke myself several times with chains making noise.  After the third time, I grabbed a bottle of bike chain lubricant and did some work to make them quiet.  it worked and the rest of the night was quite peaceful.

Mornings are definitely busy in the village.  I was up around 7am and rode my bike to the General Store to grab a coffee.  I took a little ride down to the lake and drank my coffee in a quiet spot that was perfect for meditation.  I then rode back to my site and grabbed my toiletries and rode back to the Launderette/Shower.  They had a little line to get a shower stall, but it moved quickly.  The cost was $5 and it was well worth it for the ability to take a nice long uninterrupted shower.

I spent the day exploring Jackson and over into the Teton Valley and Driggs/Victor.  I returned later in the afternoon and grabbed a bite from John Colter's Ranch House .  The second night was much more quiet and peaceful with the stars shining bright.

My only qualms about the site were about how close you are to other cabins and the noise.  I would still love to stay here again.

Great location!

My sister and I stayed here after we couldn’t get a site at Jenny Lake. They have a ton of tent sites so the odds of nabbing a one is high. We got in line on a Friday morning around 7:15 and we were lucky enough to grab one of the last 20 sites available. Check in line was slow (we were in line for 3 hrs) but site was good! There is potable water, bathrooms are clean, and trash/recycling are readily available.

It’s a quick 5 min walk to the lake to stargaze or play in the water. Same amount of time to walk to the general store/visitor center. I have Verizon and didn’t have much service anywhere. General store has free WiFi and you’ll see a bunch of people in front or under the trees at the picnic tables on their phones. Free drinking water is available by spigot at the general store and the gas station on the main road.

I would recommend and stay here again. We didn’t spend much time at the campsite so it did the trick for a few days.

Amazing

This campground has some absolutely beautiful scenery as you would expect in Grand Teton National Park. It has access to river rock beaches with swimming at Colter bay, restaurants and gift shops (which we did not have time to explore), so much hiking and exploring you can do and yellowstone is in driving distance.

They are first come first serve so arrive early to get your spot as they fill up fast, even on weekdays. We left on a Friday at 6am before they opened for check in (in August) and when we left people were already in line in their cars waiting to get spots.

We were in loop B with a small trailer. Moderately private sites with fire ring, bear proof food safe, picnic table. Bathroom and water in easy walking distance.

Centrally Located

We spent quite a bit of time in the Colter Bay Village area during our visit to Grand Teton. We split time tent camping and staying in one of the historic Colter Bay Cabins. Reservations are not accepted for the campground and are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. We arrived at the campground to get in line around 7:00 a.m. and were able to get a sight within 15 or 20 minutes of the gate opening.

We drove into our site and pitched our tent and then headed back out for the day to explore the park. We were so busy trying to get as much in that I didn't get any photos of the tent site. However, the sites are nicely spaced with a good deal of shade. Each site has a nice and clean fire ring, picnic table and ample flat ground for pithing a tent.

The campground has bathrooms spaced within each loop. They have an area to drain dish water (separate from the bathroom) and flush toilets. I would say that the bathrooms are dated but we didn't experience them being gross or overly dirty as another reviewer mentioned. And yes, the campground is a little expensive which is normal for Grand Teton. In my experience, it is one of the most expensive parks to travel in.

Our cabin at Colter Bay was wonderful! It was clean and just what we needed for a few nights. The folks in the office were attentive and friendly. The folks in the cabin next to us were a bit loud but it didn't impact our stay much. It wasn't spacious but it was plenty big enough to bring things in, get ready for a backcountry trip, shower and get a good night's sleep. No, they aren't cheap but we didn't mind splurging for a few nights!

GTNP—incredible

Colter bay....where to relax after Yellowstone and much more accessible. Colter bay has 200-300 camp sites nestled in under the trees. It’s crowed but workable. First come first serve. Get there in the AM and getting a spot is easy. Do not wait till 4pm. You pull your trailer, motor home, parallel to the camp site.
Know National Park rules, this is not forest service land and the rangers will enforce their rules and regulations accordingly. As with any National Park the best of the Park lays outside the your campsite. The views of wildlife and landscape are everywhere.

Amazing camp ground

Stayed here for 6 days had amazing time. We were a minute walk away from the lake and a perfect view of the mountains. They had a great general store with decent prices for being the only store around. And a really nice buffet restaurant with some really amazing servers. The area is in bear country and we did see a bear. And there were obvious signs that the bares were in the ariea alot. When we saw the dear was near us there was also 3 rangers following it keeping the campers safe.

Better than Yellowstone

Well kept campground. Gravel area for tents. Beautiful views. We saw moose, bear, foxes, and elk nearby. Market, laundry mat, and showers very close. Four stars

Amazing Location

If you’re looking to be in the heart of the Tetons with water access at your finger tips, this is the campground for you. Spots fill up quick (get there before noon if you can) but if you can snag a tent site close to the lake trail you are just a couple minutes from the Teton mountain range for every sunset.

Dogs are also welcome!

Best trip ever

This was my very first time tent camping and I was extremely nervous but I can’t imagine a better experience. The amenities were fantastic and the views breathtaking. I was there with my three small kids for 4 nights and we all had a great time. I can’t wait to come back.

Colter Bay Stole My heart

Don’t stay anywhere else but here in the Tetons, incredible views with excellent access to water and incredible sunrise views of the Tetons. 10/10 would do again!

Dirty and Noisy

This was the most awful camping experience we had in 10 National Parks. The bathrooms and sites were flooded and dirty. Sites were over-crowded. No privacy. The campground managers were helpless to assist, even when we reported domestic violence that went on for hours. The tkld is to call the police, but there was no reception in the park (4 other people were trying to call also), and the solitary payphone was disconnected. We left early, forfeiting our money, and went to Grand Teton. The only cool parts were the bison walking through the campsites and the black bear (Although we were told one had to be shot because it kept returning to the campground.)

good spot on north side of Jackson Lake

You can’t really go wrong in the Tetons, bc...it’s the Tetons. We base-camped here for 4 nights to explore GTNP. only regret is that it made for some long drives down to the southern areas of the park/Jackson/Teton Village. If we did it over, might’ve split with some nights in Gros Ventre or even Granite Creek, but CB was good for us. it’s a busy mini-town with tons of activity, people, and tour buses during the day. But we benefited from the showers and laundry. plus, you can usually find a quiet place somewhere on the shore of Jackson Lake.

the CG Is huge but empties out every day by 10am (it filled up only a couple of the nights we were there). our spot was a little more spacious, which the kids enjoyed. most sites weren’t much to look at, but walk a few feet and you’ll see Mt Moran over thr trees, which makes up for it.

Only complaint was that we were told when arriving we couldnt take a particular site that was open bc it was being held for someone. i told the guard i thought all sites were FCFS with no reservations? we took the site across from that one, and nobody ever came for the site we wanted.

Having big bear boxes at every site was really appreciated. Grants Village in Yellowstone had one box half that size that was shared by 5-6 sites—nope!

Wish I was here longer

This was a great campground! Though the showers were pay, they were well maintained and nice. There is a beautiful trail not far from the camping that gives you a great view of the Tetons. There is also a NPS visitor center that will give you any information you'd need!
