Honey Bear Campground

I loved staying here this summer. I took my two boys and we tent camped on a full hookup spot. Mainly got it because it was on the creek, but walking around I could of did partial hookup and have some good views. Bathhouse was clean and didn’t feel stuffy which I liked. Workers were friendly and they hosted events. Fishing in the pond was great. Our campsite wasn’t the original one we picked but I didn’t care I actually preferred the new one. Except there was a leak coming from a pipe that made my spot get wet in one area. I definitely would love to come back.

I’m giving it a 3 star because it’s in a good area close to Boone and the fact we had privacy due to the foliage. We stayed by the creek which was nice to hear. However, the owners were never around, the office was never open, and the coffee shop might as well have never been open or exist because the office always closed. Never seen anyone and we got there Sunday, October 2nd at 2pm and stayed until Wednesday, October 5th and left at 10am and never seen anyone in the office.

I went to school at App State and was excited to enjoy Boone again! My friend and I took my pop-up and stayed at spot B12. The campground was extremely helpful and kind. The bathrooms are conveniently located from B12–just a lovely bridge over a creek walk away. You’re so close to the town of Boone, but it doesn’t feel like it at all when you’re secluded under the canopy of the trees. The weather was amazing in July—warm during the day and cool and brisk at night.

Sites are close together but don’t feel that way. Plenty of trees, shade, and a babbling brook. Very family friendly but enjoyed it as a couple and their fur baby.

Beautiful campground with running creeks and sloping drives. Pleasantly surprised the weekend prior to Halloween that there was trick or treating, a haunted trail (kid friendly), and wagon ride. Camp team were extremely friendly and welcoming. Cute on-site coffee shop, clean bath houses, easy check in and setup process with the convenience of fire wood delivered to your site prior to arrival. Looking forward to returning!

We arrived on a Friday and left on Sunday. It did rain most of the weekend, but we still enjoyed our time. Bath house was clean and well taken care of. When we wanted some dry firewood to try and do a fire, at one point when it wasn’t raining, we sent the office a text message and they brought it right to our campsite on their golf cart. Friendly staff. Quiet area, but only a short drive from lots of attractions. Would go again.

We go back here multiple times each season. Very family friendly. Sites are relatively clean, easy to park at, bath house is clean& easily accessible. They even have a"coffee shop". The staff here are amazing! The campground is tucked away outside of Boone, but not so far that if you really need something you cant get it. The staff does a great job making sure the quiet hours are really quiet and no craziness happens. After looking around at other campgrounds, we really love this one. Most of the sites are shaded so in the heat of the summer it is really pleasant to hang out at the campsites(usually with a nice breeze). The location is also not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway and lots of great hiking.

I camped at Honey Bear Campground a couple summers ago.  It's great, if you need an easy access spot and have kids.  However, I tend to like campgrounds that are more secluded and off the regular path.  It seemed like a good place to camp for us college students, since it was so close to campus.  But it's definitely more for families.  So this campgrounds, wasn't right for me and my group. They have a decent sized dog area, in which your dogs can run around safely off leash.  After walking around, we noticed there were campsites that were more close together, while some more tucked away behind brush.  I would recommend asking the check in desk about these different sites, so you can pick the one that fits your group most.  However, mother nature does not disappoint.  Our nature walks were gorgeous and we even found chicken of the woods close by!

One of these days, A 0 stars rating is critical to the overall scoring process. Honey Bear should be thankful for the scoring process because the single star at least gives some advantage to the overall score. Let me begin by saying that the pictures do not match the grounds. Well, one of them may match hit the rest are seriously filtered. Turning into the grounds from the main road, there is a series of make-shift goat pens made from old wooden pallets. Each standing on its end and side-by-side attached however but not well enough for the one escape artist who is actually one of the better sites you will enjoy during your stay! To the right, an empty (seemingly also abandoned) commercial building that houses empty office locations. The old sign team still stands with no signage but one fluorescent bulb still burns at night. Further ahead, on the left are two open roll off dumpsters for trash. If that is not cause for rodents and other vermin, nothing is. Beyond those are travel trailers that others are being stored. The office is nothing near as clean as you are going to expect. The coffee house is closed but the only way you will know that is if you follow them on Facebook. Hope you have Facebook. The bathhouse and laundry facilities are also closed. We reserved a double site. One hour prior to arrival, we received a call regarding being transferred to a different site. When we arrived to the site, it was a small site and not what we paid for. I spoke to Marsha and indicated that we wanted a different location. We were supposed to be in B section however due to below freezing temperatures, we were moved to A section where they have a few frost free water connections. We paid and we are here! Let's make the best of it. Once set up and stabilized, we plugged i to the power connection which shorted out our power cord and our unit receptacle. Because she has no maintenance personnel, I had to test the power supply myself which determined that all three legs were hot. Serious problem especially when the temperature was 29°. I called to let her know what was going on and she did not have a solution. Our options were dependent on whether or not the grounds keeper was still on site. It is now after 8:00 pm. On Sunday. We had enough battery power for basic functions and enough gas for heat so we did it old school. Monday, we headed straight to a dealer to purchase a new cord as well as the receptacle. I called at 12:02 pm to verify if the supply had been repaired but was told that she was not at the office yet because she does not come in until noon and was unsure of the grounds keeper was there. I said it is after noon but no response given. It was after 1:00 pm before the supply connection was replaced and once we had our work completed, we were back in business. I hope you know some handyman basics because you are going to need them. Not once did she follow up to make sure our stay was going better. Not once did she offer to make good on anything. I spent my first two days of vacation working because Marsha does not work at all when it comes to maintaining the grounds, water, power and such. I will be furthering this with appropriate sites, social media outlets and local bureaus/chambers.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LOCATION!

Very cute campground. The staff is awesome and so nice. They have kids crafts and activities!

Stayed here on the way back from Hiking the AT. Clean and hot showers, great bathhouse with lots of privacy. The campsites where clean and well spaced with a lot of greenery in between. Offers both long and short time stays!

**Campground Review: **

This is the second year in a row of us ending our summer road trip at Honey Bear Campground in Boone, NC. Honey Bear is a medium sized campground with around 60 sites that are a mix of full hook up, RV water& electric, Tent water& electric, primitive camp sites, and a group tent camp area. There is also two small cabins to rent. All sites with hook ups also included cable hook ups. I have included a campground map in my pictures for your orientation. All the sites are gravel and most sites are wooded with lots of shade. The sites are a little sloped, so have leveling equipment ready. The sites vary from small and close together, to medium size with established plumeria shrubs separating sites for some privacy. All style sites include a picnic table and fire ring. If the campground is full, they do have an overflow area that they allow you to boondock at until a site opens up. 

Check-in was easy at the office at the entrance of the campground. We stayed on site B12 again this year as we find it private, well shaded, and close to a small creek that provided background water noise when it’s flowing good. This site does have a good slope to it and we had to use a stack of 3 Cacmo leveling blocks to get level, but if anything, this is my only minor complaint about this site. 

The bathhouse is centrally located and older, but functional and cleaned daily. There are also laundry machines available between the men’s and women’s area. 

Firewood and ice was available at the office. You can even walk down, pay for wood and/or ice and they will deliver it to your site! The office also has limited other supplies. There is a full grocery store less than 10 minutes away. Connected to the office is a coffee bar that also had some seating and a TV(Seemed to be a teen hang out in the evenings). 

We found good cell phone service with Verizon throughout the property. The campground did have wi-fi, however we only got a good connection if we were near the office/coffee bar. 

The campground also has a dog run, which our dogs loved. After being on the road for two weeks they enjoy every opportunity to get off leash and run. The dog area was surprisingly clean, so either the dog owners are doing the right thing and cleaning up after their dogs, or the staff monitors and cleans this area regularly. 

Being right on the outskirts of Boone is very beneficial. The area offers all types of outdoor activities, from hiking, rock climbing, fishing, mountain biking, and an assortment of snow sports in the winter. Additionally, you’ll find lots of shopping, restaurants, breweries & wineries, and appealing little towns around the area to explore. Also, Boone sits at 3,333 feet (surrounding mountains go up to 6K), so even in the middle of the summer you’ll find very comfortable day and night temperatures. 

Pro Tip: Check with the office for the Saturday night movie! Weather dependent, they show a movie outdoors on the front lawn. Bring your chair or blanket and a cooler/snacks, and come hang out for a movie with fellow campers. They had multiple fire pits going the Saturday we were there, so bring your favorite snacks to toast over the fire. 

With this being our second year to stop here, we have fallen in love with the area. We recommend this campground and will keep returning to this area. I wish it was a little closer to where we live and we’d come here a lot more often!

**Product Review: **

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get to test products. At this campground, I tested the Gregory Intertia 20 H2O Hydration Pack. This backpack from Gregory turned out to be my new favorite day hiking pack. The 20L easily fits all my day hiking equipment with room to spare. The 3L reservoir is plenty of water for a day hike even on the warmest of days. What I also really like is the side pockets. They are very deep, so if you are on a shorter hike where you are not using the 3L reservoir, you don’t have to worry about water bottles popping out of the side pockets (I’ve had other packs with short side pockets where water bottles fall out easily). The front mesh pocket is also large enough to hold all that“need now” type gear and there is a small quick stow pocket that is lined and perfect for storing glasses or sunglasses. Even loaded down with more than I’d usually take for a day hike, I found that with the multiple adjustment straps, this pack proved to be very comfortable and rode perfect on my back. I highly recommend this pack for day hikes and look forward to trying some of their larger packs in the future.

The staff were very accommodating as this was my first camping experience with a travel trailer. They took the time to get me perfectly backed into my site since the reservation map was a little misleading and appeared to be a pull through site. They are family oriented and camp kids are everywhere! They have a great little coffee shop. A fish pond and creek are available to explore, so boredom isn’t an option. There are some issues with night noise from neighboring sites, but a really good overall experience.

2 night stay while traveling the east coast. Campground is very close to town so makes it very convenient to see the sites or run to the store for something. Friendly and helpful staff. Coffee bar on premises. Some sites seemed small and close together. Others were larger and more private so pick wisely. Bathhouse is a little dated but clean and functional. Will visit again.

We stayed at Honey Bear on the weekend before Halloween. The campground had several family activities like a haunted trail and trick or treating for the kiddos. Our tent site was small and we may have been the only tent at the campground that weekend. Site had a tent pad, picnic table, and fire pit. The staff were fantastic, helpful, and kind. There's a cafe of sorts in the center that has a coffee bar, TV, and tables for playing games on. This is definitely a campground for families-- don't expect to go and have a peaceful, quiet retreat. Downtown Boone is a 10 minute drive and there are many hiking trails around.

Its a cute little getaway down hwy 221 outside of Blowing Rock. Far enough away to make it worth it.

If youre into a bit of glamping. This place works! Good for kids - rootbeer float nights, outdoor movies with marshmellow pits, crerks to splash in. Full bathhouses, laundry & eben a gameroom. My kids loved the tire swings & animals!

Owners were helpful & the campground is close to many hiking trails & Blue Ridge.

Staff was nice, campgrounds were clean. Only downside is the main road is right near the last tent spot. Just make sure you reserve one closer towards the main building

This campground is located just outside of Boone and is in a great location. Off the main roads, but convenient to many local attractions. My family and I stayed two nights. The staff was friendly and accommodating to our needs.

My kids enjoyed the activities and the stream. Everybody there seemed to be having a great time.... Kids, parents, couples, groups, college kids, older rv's, and staff. The gentleman that checked in before me indicated that his family goes there every year for a week vacation. One of our neighbors at the campground said they just stayed there this past Memorial Day weekend and loved it so much that they came back for the 4th of July weekend.

I didn't get a chance to walk around the whole campground, but the sites seemed to be nice. The bathhouse was in good order, and the staff checked on it multiple times during the day. Overall, a satisfying and joyful experience. We plan on going back.
