Part of the Bureau of Land Management's network along the North Platte River, Dugway Campground provides free camping on five designated sites plus additional dispersed options. The campground sits about six miles north of Interstate 80, accessible via a dirt road that several campers describe as rough but manageable for most vehicles.
Sites spread across open sagebrush terrain with gravel pads, spaced roughly 100 yards apart along the river. Ray & Terri F. found site 5 particularly spacious for their 36-foot Class A, noting "there are some fairly large potholes at the front of the site, but the backend is smooth." The campground fills regularly during peak summer months, with most overnight visitors departing by morning.
Wildlife encounters happen frequently here. Reviewers report deer wandering through campsites at dawn, plus eagles, pelicans, and ducks along the water. However, rattlesnakes present a real concern in the sagebrush areas - one reviewer's dog required veterinary treatment after a bite. Mosquitoes and biting flies can be problematic during mornings and evenings, though wind typically provides relief during midday hours.
Basic amenities include a hand-pump water source, vault toilet with nighttime lighting, picnic tables, and fire rings. William G. appreciated that the facilities are "extra clean with lite at nite." Cell coverage varies significantly by carrier, with AT&T requiring signal boosters while T-Mobile provides stronger service. The nearby I-80 Travel Plaza and Restaurant offers full services six miles south.
Plan to arrive before evening during busy periods, as the limited sites operate first-come, first-served year-round.
Description
Besides the sound of the river meandering north, this is a very peaceful campground. There is flyfishing for trout here. There is also a take out for the North Platte River, for canoers or kayakers. A control crest was put in below the dugway so boaters are advised to start their trips upstream. This is a free site with 5 campsites (1 pull-through, 4 spurs), group site, vault toilet, day use parking, picnic tables, fire rings/grills, and parking spur. The main attraction is the North Platte River for fishing and floating. No horses are allowed in the campground.
