Reservations are available for this 80-site campground within Mark Twain State Park, with nightly rates ranging from $24-$80 depending on site type and season. The campground divides into three loops—Puma, Coyote, and Badger—though Badger occasionally closes during slower periods. Access roads can be rough, particularly after rain, so drivers should plan accordingly.
The Puma loop features electric-only sites with the newest shower facilities, while most sites lack individual water hookups except for host locations. Sites vary considerably in terrain, with some offering steep slopes that require leveling blocks and others sitting relatively flat. "Shady, with a wooded view in back," describes many spots, as dense forest surrounds most camping areas. Several sites provide partial lake views through vegetation, with sites 74, 76, 77, and 82 noted by campers as having the best water glimpses.
The campground sits near Mark Twain Lake with direct access to a boat ramp and fish cleaning station. Three hiking trails wind through the park, connecting to create loops of varying lengths. A swimming beach operates seasonally, and the park includes playgrounds in multiple areas. "Easy access to the lake" makes this a draw for boaters and anglers, though the tall trees buffer most boat noise from reaching campsites.
Cell service runs weak in many areas, though WiFi coverage helps compensate. The nearest store sits about 15 miles away, but camp hosts sell ice and firewood on-site. Coyote Campground — Mark Twain State Park offers a nearby alternative with different amenities just a short distance east.
Description
Puma Campground has 37 campsites, two that are ADA-accessible and four that are family sites. The pad lengths range from 45 to 61 feet long, but the family sites have an extra pad and electric hookup. The shower house and restrooms with flush toilets are centrally located in the middle of the campground by the host campsite, number 93. There is a playground for the kids in the middle of the southern end of the campground and sites 71 through 78 are all located right next to the lake. The boat ramp is by site 58 at the northern end of the campground and there is a large parking lot and a fish cleaning station there as well. Potable water spigots are found at the host site as well as sites 64, 73, 83, 90, and 103. From November until March, you will need to go to the frost-free water access by campsite one in Badger Campground. Pets are welcome as long as they are restrained or on a leash at all times.
