Wellington, located at 5,200 feet elevation in northern Colorado, experiences hot summers and cold winters with low humidity. The area sits between the grasslands of the eastern plains and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, creating diverse camping opportunities with both prairie and mountain landscapes within reach.
What to Do
Fishing activities: At Horsetooth Reservoir South Bay Campground, you can enjoy shoreline fishing or boat access. "This is a great location to bring your boat for wakesurfing, kayak or SUP. I recommend the South Bay. The campground is nice and the natives are chill," notes camper Tom D.
Hiking trails: The Kruger Rock Trail starts directly from Hermits Hollow Campground and rewards hikers with panoramic views. "The Kruger Rock Trailhead is inside the campground, and it is a nice hike with an amazing view of the Rockies and Estes at the top. Bring your crayons - there are two trailmarkers on the trail that you can do rubbings of," says Erin K.
Mountain exploration: Rocky Mountain National Park is accessible from several Wellington-area campgrounds. "The location approximately 4 miles outside of Estes Park is great," notes a visitor to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, making it convenient for day trips to the national park.
What Campers Like
Lake views: Many sites at Carter Lake provide scenic water views. "Depending on what spot you get, you may have wonderful views of the lake," explains Jeremy C. about Eagle Campground at Carter Lake, adding "This particular campground was clean and the camp hosts were great."
Evening entertainment: Some campgrounds offer structured activities. "We love the river, dog park, live music on sat. night and laundry," shares Tyler D. about Riverview RV Park & Campground, where weekend performances make for relaxing evenings.
Spacious sites: The region offers camping spots with room to spread out. "Our site was very wide and open, but we might just have been lucky. Most are tree covered sites and not packed in," explains Aaron about Riverview RV Park, which provides a more comfortable experience than tightly packed sites.
What You Should Know
Reservation requirements: During peak seasons, campgrounds fill quickly. "This campground experience varies significantly based on your site," notes Christine S. at Eagle Campground. "I imagine the reservations for those [lakeside sites] go quickly, but I will definitely try to get one of those sites next year."
Site variability: The terrain around Wellington creates diverse camping conditions. "Loop A site 14. The campsites in this section had good tree cover for shade," notes Bryan K. about Glacier Basin Campground, while "the beetles have caused many of the trees to be removed; however, despite what the reservation site says, loop C has enough trees to hang a hammock."
Additional fees: Check for day-use fees beyond camping costs. "It was likely our error, but we did not see anywhere in the booking process that there would be additional fees once we arrive at the campground," explains one reviewer about Horsetooth Reservoir South Bay.
