Fishing and water access drive most visits to Big Thomson Campground at Carter Lake, where sites sit on open terrain directly above the water. Managed by Larimer County, this established campground provides full hookups for RVs along with tent sites, though Vincent P. notes that "access to the lake for kayaking and fishing could not be any more convenient." The hillside location offers unobstructed lake views from most sites.
Sites cluster closely together with minimal privacy screening between them. Traffic noise from nearby roads carries throughout the day, and some campers report that quiet hours aren't consistently observed. Wildlife passes through regularly—deer and wild turkeys make frequent appearances according to multiple reviews. The single bathroom facility stays clean, though campers should expect to pay both camping fees and daily day-use fees.
Fishing produces consistent results, with one reviewer catching fish continuously during their stay. Multiple beaches provide lake access within walking distance of the sites. The marina store sits nearby for supplies and convenience items. Wind can be significant due to the exposed location above the water.
For campers wanting larger sites or better separation, South Shore Campground sits just 0.2 miles north with more spacious accommodations.
Description
Carter Lake is located in the foothills west of Loveland at an elevation of 5,760 feet. It is a part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District. The purpose of this water project is to divert water from the west slope to the east slope for drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower generation. The Bureau of Reclamation is solely responsible for power generation. The agencies jointly manage water levels for irrigation, municipal, and industry use. Recreation is managed by Larimer County Natural Resources. Three miles long and about one mile wide, Carter Lake is a 1,100-acre reservoir surrounded by 1,000 acres of public lands and is popular for fishing, sailing, camping, swimming, scuba diving, rock climbing, and water skiing. It is open year round. Park Entrance Permits and Camping Fees are required.
