The Stanislaus River flows directly through this state park campground, creating a natural water playground that draws families back year after year. Campers can float downstream from the campground area to the day-use beach in about 45 minutes, with a popular swimming hole about two-thirds of the way down that offers deeper water for taking a dip.
Most sites sit under mature trees that provide substantial shade during Ripon's hot summers. Campers can choose their own spots from available sites, with many positioned close to river access points. "Most of the sites are close to the entrance to the river," notes Barbara B., making it easy to carry tubes and swimming gear down to the water. Sites accommodate RVs up to 24 feet, though the campground operates without hookups.
Weekend visits bring crowds of families with children, creating a lively atmosphere that can extend into evening hours. The park offers nature programs and outdoor movies for kids during regular seasons, though these pause during health restrictions. Several easy hiking trails wind through the wooded areas, while the river provides opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Modern restrooms and showers serve the camping area.
Mosquitoes become particularly active during summer months due to the river and dense vegetation, so insect repellent proves essential. "TONS of mosquitos, be prepared!" warns Sandra S. about peak season conditions. The campground operates year-round with reservations available, though nights cool down significantly even after hot days.
This riverside setting works well for families seeking water-based recreation and campers who enjoy a social camping atmosphere, particularly those prepared for active mosquito populations during warmer months.
