Road conditions become challenging beyond the second dispersed camping spot along Tanque Road, where deep sand and washed-out sections limit access for larger RVs. This Arizona State Land Department site accommodates multiple campers across flat areas with established fire rings, positioned before a steep, slanted hill and wash that marks the practical end point for big rigs.

Campers can explore nearby hot springs using side-by-sides or other off-road vehicles, though the route requires navigating bumpy terrain. The site provides mountain views in all directions with no natural shade, plus abundant firewood from previous structures. Cell service reaches the area, and the location offers dark skies for stargazing away from urban light pollution, making it suitable for places to camp around Safford seekers wanting dispersed camping access.

Ok but not much shade

This is the second spot on Tanque road. The first spot was taken so we decided to keep on traveling down the road. There is no other spots between the first spot and this one AND no where to really turn around. Right before is a pretty big wash and a steep hill slanted to one side. The spot is big enough for at least 4 campers with flat areas and fire rings. Kids would love all the rocks!! We used our side by side to travel over to the Hot Springs and I would not recommend for any big rigs to go farther that this spot. It is deep sand, lots of washed out road and very bumpy. The spot has spectacular views of all the mountains but no shade.
Someone must have took apart a building here because there is lots of wood for a fire. The night sky is amazing with no light pollution
