Within BLM Land managed by the Bureau of Land Management's Safford Field Office, Haekel Rd Dispersed Camping provides free camping on open gravel terrain near a small dam. Campers access multiple flat areas via a gravel road, with GPS coordinates leading to the primary spot though additional sites spread throughout the area.
The camping area sits completely exposed with no natural windbreaks or shade structures. Kevin C. notes it's "very secluded and quiet" despite being relatively close to the access road. Multiple reviewers mention the gravelly, level ground that accommodates big rigs in the first camping zone, though sites become tighter further down toward the dam. Wind exposure can be significant, and morning temperatures drop considerably before sunrise.
Cell coverage varies by carrier, with Verizon getting 2-3 bars and AT&T showing 3-4 bars according to recent visitors. The area typically hosts a mix of overnight travelers and longer-term campers staying 7-14 days under the 14-day limit. Most sites maintain good spacing, roughly a football field apart in the main area. Views extend toward Mt. Graham's snow-capped peaks, and the open sky provides excellent stargazing conditions.
For campers wanting developed amenities, Hacienda Campground — Roper Lake State Park offers hookups and facilities about six miles west.
