Surprise Campsite

Within Coconino National Forest, Surprise Campsite provides free dispersed camping on a half-mile dirt road west of the main route. The US Forest Service maintains designated camping areas to prevent overuse, with regular patrols ensuring sites stay clean and organized. This established campground accommodates everything from passenger cars to large RVs, though the camping areas themselves prove bumpier than the access road.

The site fills quickly, particularly by afternoon, with 10-15 vehicles typically present during busy periods. Morning departures around 10 or 11 AM create openings that disappear by evening. Port-a-potties serve the area, and despite proximity to the highway, noise levels remain manageable at night. The terrain offers little shade across dusty, desert terrain that works better for RVs than tent camping.

Hot air balloons provide morning entertainment as they launch and land in the surrounding valley. Simone D. notes the "Forest Service checks all sites in this area to keep it clean and safe." Cell service reaches the campground, and both pets and alcohol are permitted. The location serves as a practical base for exploring campgrounds around Cornville and the broader region.

This spot works well for RV travelers seeking free overnight camping near popular destinations, though tent campers should consider the exposed, dusty conditions before committing to multiple nights.

Many campers appreciated this free campground near Sedona for its quiet nights and basic facilities, though noted concerns about dusty desert conditions and limited shade. Great for watching morning hot air balloons.

Convenient location to sedona

Lots of cars but quiet at night! Pretty dusty but great for a close free spot near Sedona. Watched hot air balloons go up in the morning

Dusty and busy, but it works

We recently spent 4 nights here, along with about 10-15 other camping vehicles, ranging from a Toyota Camry to 5th wheels and horse trailers.  Easy access for our 39ft class A and toad, but it was busy around 2pm when we arrived and filled up even more afterward.  Every day a few spots opened up by 10/11a but filled by 5p.  There were a couple of port-a-potties, if needed.  The camping site is actually bumpier than the gravel road coming in. Not much noise, considering proximity to highway and other campers, surprisingly.

Different name now: Surprise

Great views, 1/2 a mile west on dirt road. Very clean. Forest Service checks all sites in this area to keep it clean and safe.

Surprise

I found this place when in need of a place to stay near Sedona. It fits the bill. Free, friendly travelers, pets allowed, and you get to watch hot air Ballons land in the morning.🙂

spots fill up fast

The area has little shade and very dusty desert-y. The site is now highly regulated so only the designated areas may be used for camping, and the place fills up very fast and mostly motor homes. It does not look very comfortable for tents. We stayed for two nights and met some nice folks traveling to Sedona like us. In the morning there are hot air balloons flying around providing free entertainments.
