Within Coconino National Forest, Greasy Spoon Dispersed Area provides free camping accessed via Forest Road 525, about 6 miles west of Sedona. This US Forest Service site accommodates various rig sizes across multiple designated spots, though campers should prepare for washboard road conditions and red dust that settles on everything.
The area attracts weekend crowds but quiets during weekdays. Two portable toilets serve the camping zone, and Verizon cell service reaches most sites. OHV traffic passes through regularly, though reviewers note respectful drivers. Kevin K. found "fellow campers were friendly" and appreciated that "trash was virtually non existent." Coyotes vocalize at night, adding to the high desert atmosphere.
Mountain views extend toward red rock formations, and the site provides access to Palatki and Honanki cliff dwelling ruins nearby. Several hiking and mountain biking trails branch from the area. Fire restrictions often apply, so campers should bring alternative cooking methods. For additional options in the region, consider places to camp around Sedona or nearby Forest Road 525 Camping Area.
The dispersed setup works well for self-sufficient campers who don't mind dust and road noise in exchange for free camping near Sedona's attractions.
Description
While much of the Forest is open to dispersed camping, there are several sites set aside as designated dispersed camping sites, listed below. Pick up or download a free Motor Vehicle Use Map to know where it is legal to drive. See Guidelines for information and policies, and Specific Sites for more details and contact information.
Know before you go! Be aware extreme winter weather or flooding risks can necessitate the closure of forest roads at different times of the year. Many forest roads that lead to dispersed campsites may be closed during seasonal road closures, so please check the Forest Road Status web page for more information about the status of forest roads in each District.
Fire restrictions may be in place. During fire restrictions, campfires, fires, and charcoal fires are not permitted in dispersed camping areas. This includes both Stage 1 and Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. Gas operated devices with an on/off switch are allowed
