Part of the US Forest Service's Prescott National Forest, this dispersed camping area sits along a dirt road that deteriorates quickly beyond the first few sites. The entrance features a posted sign limiting stays to seven days maximum, with camping restricted to marked established sites only.
The road conditions present the primary challenge here. Larrissa A. warns the "rough road, wouldn't recommend for trailers," while other campers note the surface becomes increasingly rutted with large dips as you progress deeper into the area. Sites 1 and 2 remain accessible to most vehicles, but beyond that point requires higher clearance. Recent rains can add mud to the already challenging terrain.
Multiple reviewers consistently mention litter problems throughout the camping area, with discarded clothes, toilet paper, and general trash affecting the experience. Some campers report cleaning up sites upon arrival. The area does provide established fire pits and allows campfires, though campers need to bring their own firewood. Cell service appears available with Verizon showing two bars in at least some locations.
Wildlife encounters include deer moving through the area at night and occasional coyote calls in the morning. For those wanting developed facilities, White Spar Campground offers a different experience just over a mile north.
Description
Dispersed camping is camping outside of developed campgrounds. In contrast to camping in developed campsites, dispersed camping is more primitive, and generally has no amenities such as trash collection, water or toilets.
The Prescott Basin is an area immediately south and west of Prescott, Arizona and encompasses approximately 59,000 acres (about 4% of the Prescott National Forest).
Prescott Basin has a high percentage of wildland-urban interface, a mixture of undeveloped and developed land. The popularity of the Prescott Basin, has contributed to resource impacts such as accelerated soil erosion, damage or loss of vegetation, displaced wildlife, increased fire risk, and accumulation of trash and human waste.
To help prevent unacceptable resource damage from dispersed camping, Forest Service resource managers have designated sites, established stay limits, and limits on building and maintaining campfires.
