Trains rumble past frequently at this dispersed BLM camping area located behind the VFW building north of Yuma. Campers access the site by driving around the west side of the VFW structure onto flat, sandy terrain that accommodates RVs up to 50 feet. The area sits directly adjacent to Highway 95 and active railroad tracks, creating consistent transportation noise throughout day and night hours.

The camping zone spans a large, mostly level expanse with scattered trees and bushes providing limited shade options. Sand dominates the ground surface, becoming dusty when winds pick up across the open landscape. Mountains rise nearby, offering hiking opportunities for those willing to trek from camp. A 14-day limit applies to stays, though enforcement appears minimal based on camper observations.

Marty C. notes the practical reality: "It is a flat/semi-flat area that is north of the VFW building on BLM land. Drive around the west side of the VFW. VFW has nothing to do with the BLM land." The location sits approximately 12 miles from town, with cell service available and both campfires and alcohol permitted. Nearby alternatives include Fortuna Lake and Yuma Lakes RV Resort.

This free camping option works for travelers needing an overnight stop despite the noise factors.

Campers regularly cited the large, level camping area that's free for 14 days, though many mentioned train and highway noise as notable drawbacks. Dusty conditions and crowding were occasional complaints, but the flat terrain works well for both RVs and tents.

Small, loud, crowded.

Small, lots of noise from joining trucking business and train tracks. Very crowded with vehicles, yet no odyssey seems to be around. It works, but is far from ideal.

BLM Yuma AZ near VFW

There were only a few sites available on Dec 9th which was a Saturday. Location is a little north of VFW. Drive into the VFW driveway, around the back of the VFW building going north. This will take you to the BLM site. Just drive around the flat area until you find a campsite. Dusty. Hwy 95 and railroad are next to camp area.

SiteThere are no disignated camp sites.

Directions sent me to the wrong place.

It is a flat/semi-flat area that is north of the VFW building on BLM land. Drive around the west side of the VFW. VFW has nothing to do with the BLM land. There is a 14 day limit stay with a "camp host" (which was not there). Yuma is about 12 miles away.

Dusty but friendly dispersed

Lots of trains going by! Right by a main highway but we enjoyed meeting the other folks and were relieved to have a place to stay after having made an attempt on a rough dirt road where we had to turn around in BLM land nearby. Of course, after getting to the area we discover that we should’ve gone out to the lake Metairie area and that there is actually a hard road access to that beautiful BLM free camping.
