Wildlife enthusiasts will find KP Cienega Campground positioned at the bottom of a dirt access road, overlooking a large meadow where elk and deer regularly appear. This small Forest Service campground features just five sites designed for tent camping, with one site able to accommodate RVs up to 16 feet. The road condition remains good according to multiple visitors, though the campground sits a couple miles off Highway 191.
Sites are compact and work best for one or two tents. A vault toilet provides the only amenity—campers must bring their own water. The campground borders an open meadow dotted with wildflowers, and a creek runs nearby with an overgrown trail alongside it. During hunting season, visitors often encounter evidence of elk and deer activity around the sites.
"Over looking a beautiful meadow," notes Optimus, who found the location "very secluded and quiet." The pit toilets stay maintained, though no trash service exists. Weather can change quickly at this elevation—one camper woke to snow in late May. For additional options in the area, campers can explore places to camp around Apache National Forest or check nearby Strayhorse Campground.
Pack out all trash and come prepared for a self-sufficient mountain camping experience.
