Haines Island

This US Army Corps of Engineers campground on the Alabama River requires boat access, as the ferry system no longer operates and road conditions to the camping area present challenges during wet weather. The site maintains a functional boat launch and basic facilities including an outhouse, though recent visitors report minimal maintenance of trails and other amenities.

Campers should prepare for primitive conditions at this free site, which accommodates RVs up to 40 feet but may suit those comfortable with more rustic camping experiences. For maintained alternatives, Isaac Creek lies southwest with full amenities and regular upkeep.

Abandoned Ferry Crossing

I was disappointed to find that this park has been pretty much abandoned. The ferry does not run across the river anymore. The boat launch is still in working condition. It appears that there used to be hiking trails for the Alabama birding trail, however they are no longer maintained.

Well this site was interesting. I checked it out but as a solo traveler my gut said nope. It’s free and the host at Issac Creek said it is safe. An outhouse and defunct ferry system that was very cool. It’s a long drop from the hard road to the camping area. Wet conditions could make for an adventure getting out. Clearly not maintained. I’m not saying no, just be prepared.
