Living history museum

This is like no other state park we’ve been to: it’s a full living history museum plus a resort campground. There’s so much history to explore in the museum and fort, plus special events like battle reenactments, frontiersmen skill demos, art shows, charming 1700s Christmas, etc. Pros: museum & fort, pool, boat launch, birding, modern campground facilities, great spot not far from highways 64 & 75 (Lexington). Cons: no hiking or other truly outdoorsy activities (but the living history aspect makes up for it), no sites along the river (a few close to it), campsites are too open and close together (but it’s not awful), there’s some kind of quarry north of the site (so stay as far south as you can). FYI: check the living history museum schedule before you make reservations.
