Caledonia State Park Campground
About
State Park
The 1,125-acre Caledonia State Park is in Adams and Franklin counties, midway between Chambersburg and Gettysburg along the Lincoln Highway, US 30.
The park is nestled within South Mountain, the northern terminus of the well-known Blue Ridge Mountain of Maryland and Virginia. Within South Mountain there are four state parks and 84,000 acres of state forest land waiting to be explored and enjoyed. The soils on either side of South Mountain are ideal for fruit production, proven by the abundance of orchards in the surrounding area.

Do your homework on sites
This was a great trip for the most part. Lots of neat things around. We went to a winery and an ice cream place as well as did some other fun things. There is a pool there and the area is fantastic. As for the site, I took one of the last ones that was available in the full hookups. Wouldn't book that site again for our unit. It was on a slope and our sewage wouldn't drain correctly as it was uphill from the campsite. That also caused issues when we went to clean our tank out upon leaving as we couldn't get it all out. We then stopped at the dump station and that ended up being an issue too. Not enough to keep us from not going back. We will be there over the Fourth of July weekend. Sites are not huge, however the bathhouse is new and nice and overall it was a great weekend!

Very nice site
Perfectly located for a 100% relaxing experience. Great infrastructure and great sites. Will definitely be back
Awesome state park
Beautifully located in the deep woods. Nice sites offering privacy. Firewood available all the time , payment for it is on honor system. Love that stuff
Quiet, but a little cramped
I stayed here in two capacities: Once as a family camper and once with a scout group. Of the two, the scout camping was preferable in my opinion (but clearly not an option for most).
The public campsites are very much hit or miss. Our site was on an incline, so trying to find a level area to set up camp was a challenge. Other sites had large, flat spots, so you almost need to visit in advance to figure out which sites are best.
When we visited there were free pieces of kindling to help start your fire. Bigger pieces were available for purchase, but you had to tote them from the front of the loop to your campsite. Having a wagon or using your car is suggested.
Depending on how deep your campsite is, you can easily walk into the park and wander the many trails.
Signs are small and easy to miss, especially in the dark. I drove past the nature center (or whatever it is called) several times because it is not marked very clearly and this was during daylight hours. During the night or winter when it is dark early, seeing those tiny signs by the side of the road would be even more challenging.
Not a ton of frills here, but the price reflects that. Good for a getaway or cheap place to stay while visiting Gettysburg or Chambersburg.
Beautiful park, loud road
I tent camped here about 30 yrs ago and was so happy to come back! But, the nearby Rt 30, especially before leaves return to the trees, is a major commuter route and soooo loud!
RV and Child Central
Hosack run loop.
Two nights the first weekend of November. Site was in good condition.
Campground was very busy, nearly every site was booked. Sites are very close to each other, there’s no privacy, and you can hear everyone and everything.
So. Many. Children. If you’re looking to get out of the city for a quiet, relaxing weekend, and do not have children of your own, look elsewhere.
Beautiful Camp
History, Appalachian Trail, wonderful bathrooms, showers, and outdoor sinks. Well groomed hiking trails, waterfall, historical Thaddeus Stevens blacksmith shop. Rangers are helpful and kind.
Very Nice Campground!
Such a nice campground. We stayed in the Chinquapin West side due to the restrictions of dogs. Not that I don't love dogs! It's just that it can get loud sometimes. We car camp and there was a slight slope to the driveway but we just parked front in. The facilities were fantastic, upgraded and very clean. The park itself had great trails even a portion of the Appalachian Trail running through. Short drive to Gettysburg. Would definitely stay again.
Not crowded during the week and clean showers and bathrooms
Located 8 Miles off of I-81. parked my pickup truck with camper shell in the tent campsite number 35. Plenty of mosquitoes so bring a citronelle candle and bug spray. Other than that it's a quiet campground during the week with clean facilities. The after hours honor system put a check in an envelope registration, including the $4.50 senior discount, the weekday (Sunday Thru Thursday) out-of-state resident fee was $27.
Great scenery very crowded
This is a great park, with beautiful scenery, just incredibly crowded. And expect to be serenaded long into the evening by motorcycles racing up and down the highway nearby.
Very good camping
Well maintained park, very clean bathrooms and showers. Nice staff. T-Mobile service is spotty in many locations and comes and goes at times even when not moving (radio wave physics). I've been here many times since 2013 initially with a 24-ft trailer until 2016, then a couple of times with a 33-ft Class A in 2021 and now my new Class B in 2022. It's always been the same good experience.

Nice sites on a great state park right of PA route 30
Very nice state park in a great location. Lots of easy hikes available. Good trout fishing nearby. Although it wasn’t open when I was camping, this state park has a swimming pool at the main park are.
Beautiful campground near I-81
Very nice campground with clean bathrooms and showers. Nice creek for the kids to play on a hot day. Great spot for kids. Wish the pool was open!
Not sure about other sites- some sites appeared not to have tent sites and steep parking. All the full look-up sites appeared very nice.
Staff was very friendly and helpful!
Love Caledonia
Been to Caledonia 50+ times over last 35 years. Family goes here for holidays and to camp once or twice every year. It’s a fantastic state park with great picnic areas next to the creek. You can also drive up the road to the dam where there’s a beautiful lake with fishing, kayaking, etc.
Hosack campgrounds
Small camp with sires from tent to full hookup
Very nice state park
Stayed here two nights while visiting Gettysburg (short 20mi drive between the two). Stayed on Chinquapin Hill, each site has picnic table and fire ring and good space for camp. The sites are close to neighbors with little brush or cover so you can see/hear whoever is next to you. Good canopy cover with the trees to block out the sun. Fantastic bathroom/shower facilities. We were very impressed as they looked relatively new. Seemed to be cleaned multiple times a day, which is a huge plus. Free showers as well. We did not use the pool facilities, but looked nice and kept well. Also looks like a number of nice hiking trails, although we didn’t have time to do any with all our time spent at Gettysburg.
Nice place
Brought my 4 year old daughter and we had a great time exploring the many streams and trails.
Nice and clean
Stayed here for the weekend and was Impressed with the cleanliness of the facilities. We did not use the pool, only because it was so crowded.
Bathrooms were very clean. The sites were pretty close together so you can hear everything your neighbors are doing and saying. Friday was very calm but Saturday night there was a lot more noise, which is to be expected.
The trails were nice and had different levels of difficulty. They had firewood for sale at the entrance of the grounds which was very nice. Overall a good experience.

Wonderful spot to set up camp.
Just visited recently and the state park is beautiful. Nice sites w/ electric and the bathhouses looked new and immaculate. Great spot to camp. We’ll definitely be going back. Cheers!
Great trails, clean facilities, somewhat tight campsites
We enjoyed our stay here very much. The trails were very enjoyable and we hiked about 15 miles with sections of the Appalachian trail. Restrooms were very clean and park was beautiful, only negative comment would be how close sites are to each other.

Great park
Sites are pretty close together and not much privacy but the trails are great and the nicest bathrooms and showers I have seen. Very beautiful area
Wonderful!
This State Park is easy to find and in a great location. The AT crosses through the park and it’s not far from the amenities of town. The park is a good size and I liked that the campsites were a bit secluded. The sites themselves were close together but we were there in late August during the week so it was practically empty. The bathroom facilities were some of the nicest and cleanest I’ve ever seen. There was even a paved path through the campsite to the bathroom. There are showers, flush toilets, sinks for hand washing, and sinks outside for dishes. We didn’t use much of the rest of the park but there is a swimming pool and lots of nice areas with picnic tables. We really enjoyed our stay!
Great ficilities!
Clean campgrounds with the best shower/bathroom ficilities I have seen. We've been on the road for a week, and this was easily the most impressive. They also have a pool, which we didn't use, and was pretty close to some restaurants, if you aren't cooking on site. I highly recommend this place!
Honeymoon July 1999
We chose to go camping here for our honeymoon. The campground offered a lot of hiking trails and swimming. Our campsite wasn't very well maintained as it had a lot of rocks throughout and didn't make for comfortable sleeping. The fire ring to use for the evening to sit at wasn't well kept and we were afraid a fire wouldn't stay well in the ring. We didn't use the amenities that were offered as we mainly used the campground as a place to rest our heads and breakfast as we were doing a lot of touring of Gettysburg.
Neighbors so close but beautiful woods
Nice big sites but the neighbors were right on top of you so it was kind of crowded. Lots of kids and folks partying until late, but I think it was peak camping season there. The fireflies were amazing and there were few mosquitoes even in mid-July. If you have kids and like to camp it's a great place to let them roam.
hiking!!
lots of trails for hiking, beautiful lake and scenery.
synchronous fireflies!
we chose this park for the nice pool (short walk from campsites) but loved the synchronous firefly show we saw in July! sites didn’t have much privacy and bathrooms were small and outdated, although adequate. showers were found at only 1 or 2 of the facilities. beautiful place!
Not the best spot
We visited this park in December so it was pretty closed down. We were hoping to stay here for a night en route from Antietam Battlefield to Gettysburg. We arrived once the sun had gone down and the park was poorly lit (by which I mean there was no lighting at all, not even at the little information kiosk) and nearly impossible to navigate. Every turn led to a dead end or closed gate with little to no signage pointing us toward the part of the park that was actually open.
While driving around in the dark looking for our campsite we passed numerous vehicles parked on the side of the road. People were just sitting in vehicles in the dark, no clue what they were up to or why they were just sitting there. The campground had one other RV there and no other equipment at sites so those vehicles on the roadside were not people actually staying in the park.
Honestly, as two women alone with our dogs we didn't feel comfortable enough to stay at the park given our experience driving in. We did stay at another PA state park the following night and though relatively empty, it was more welcoming and a park ranger was even present checking on folks. If I were in the area again, perhaps at a different time of year, I might try this place out again. In my opinion, if you're going to remain open in the off season it would be nice if the section that is open appear a bit more welcoming. This doesn't have to be a human presence or even a bunch of lights on. But there should be some sign of life to welcome those staying in the facility.
Pretty, but can get crowded
Great location. Excellent spot to get to some nice short hikes or the AT. Awesome views and easy access to the blue mountains. Lots of decent amenities, flush toilets, power. But with that brings more crowded sites with more people always coming and going...
Access to the AT
The greatest feature of this park is that there is access to the AT! And there are plenty of hiking trails! I do not care for the campsites. The size is not to bad but they are in need of some grooming. I would return for day use but I probably would not camp there again. Happy Camping!!
