Mikesell Potts Recreation Area

Boaters and anglers find direct lake access at Mikesell Potts Recreation Area, a county-managed campground on the shores of Lake DeSmet near Saddlestring, Wyoming. The facility operates on an honor system, with campers filling out envelopes at a self-serve station—reviewers recommend bringing a pen for the check-in process.

The campground spreads across open terrain with a mix of lakefront and interior sites. Several spots sit directly beside the water, while others occupy the back areas where pronghorn frequently wander through camp. Maria S. found it "quiet and had spot right by lake" during her stay. The vault toilets receive consistent praise for cleanliness, though they may close seasonally during colder months.

RV campers can access a limited number of sites with electric and water hookups, with gravel pads that accommodate larger rigs. Tent campers have several grass sites to choose from, though wind can pick up across the open landscape at night. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit, though the fire rings lack cooking grates. A nearby store sells firewood and basic supplies for $7.50 per bundle.

The campground charges $15-20 per night and welcomes pets throughout the facility. A playground provides entertainment for families, while the lake offers opportunities for stone skipping and water activities. Cattle occasionally block the access road, adding a rural element to the approach. Winter visitors will find the area nearly empty, as Nicole L. discovered during her February stay when she was the only camper present.

The location serves as a convenient overnight stop for travelers heading to regional destinations, with Buffalo KOA offering full-service camping about seven miles southeast for those preferring additional amenities.

A hidden gem with beautiful lakefront sites and clean facilities at a reasonable price. Most visitors appreciated the quiet atmosphere and easy check-in, though some noted occasional bathroom closures.

Pronghorns

Nice lake front camping spots and some in the back with prong horns visiting. Great place to walk around.

The vaults are clean and well stocked. We had a spot with no neighbors and trees on three sides.

There are only a few spots with power, so get there early.

Beautiful site

Found this by chance en route to custer state park. Lots of pitches. Quiet and had spot right by lake. Clean toilets. Make sure to take a pen to be able to check in/complete envelope.

serene and scenic

Paid $15 to camp. Had a park for playing that was a big hit. A store right near by had some supplies including wood for $7.50

Beautiful sunset. Has picnic tables and firepits but no grate for cooking. A few sites are good for tents and more are good for RVs because they have gravel.

Spaced out and simple

Check in is via honor system. Most sites have some from between them. Saw lots of pronghorn. Did get a bit windy in the night, especially in a tent. Bathrooms were closed.

Peaceful overnight with skipping stones and cows

Great little spot between Bad Lands and Yellowstone. Pulled in late, had no problem finding a spot and paying. Vault toilets that are clean. Just a few other campers. Beautiful lake for skipping stones. Cows that occasionally block the road.

Gem for travelers

Stay here before staying at Lake Stop just before it. There is no contest which is more enjoyable and sweet of a spot. We were passing through and were happy to find this quiet place. We didn’t spend any daytime here as we arrived later and left early.
