Bucknum Rd BLM Dispersed Camping

Wind sweeps across the open grassland at this Bureau of Land Management dispersed camping area along Bucknum Road. Campers pull off the roadside into a large, level field where cattle graze nearby and cacti dot the landscape. The site accommodates big rigs easily on the flat terrain, though the exposed location means wind can pick up during the day before settling after dark.

The area lacks designated fire rings, but campers can create their own setups in the expansive space. Cell service reaches this location, and the open terrain provides unobstructed views toward the horizon. "Saw a great sunrise though," notes Megan R. about the morning light show across the plains. Visitors should watch for cow pies scattered throughout the area and keep pets clear of the prickly pear cacti.

Road conditions become problematic after rainfall, when the access route turns muddy enough to trap vehicles. Several campers have required towing assistance during wet conditions, making this spot best suited for dry weather camping. The location works well as an overnight stop for travelers passing through central Wyoming.

For those wanting developed amenities, Fort Caspar Campground offers hookups and facilities about 15 miles southeast.

Good one-nighter

It’s open and quiet. Watch out for cow “pies” and cacti (especially if traveling with dogs!!) but good if you’re passing through and need a place to stop for the night. Nothing special but not bad.

Good for one night

This was a great area to quickly stop overnight, however be very careful and aware of the mud. We got stuck and had to get towed. Saw a great sunrise though!

Great One Night Stop!

Big open area, can get pretty windy but does die down later in the night. Can get muddy after rainfall so not recommended if rainfall is in the forecast. No fire rings but can easily pull off the side. Very level. Great sunsets and sunrises!
