Accessible by car with electric and water hookups, South Campground within Merrick State Park provides 15-dollar sites along the Mississippi River. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources manages this established campground with drinking water, restrooms, showers, and a dump station available. Sites include drive-in, walk-in, and boat-in options, with many positioned directly on the river according to recent campers.
Reviewers note the large, flat campsites and mention poison ivy presence in the south loop area. Bug protection proves essential during warmer months. Showers and flush toilets require a drive to the nearby North Campground — Merrick State Park, though the facilities stay clean. Firewood sells for five dollars at wheelbarrows near the park entrance.
Description
The south campground has 35 campsites, including 28 waterfront sites on Fountain City Bay. In years the Mississippi River floods, the south campground is closed until the water recedes and the campground dries out. The north campground shower building can be used by campers from the south campground.
