Eagle Rock Campground

A sharp turn off the road through Smoke Hole Canyon leads to this riverside campground where the South Branch of the Potomac forms one border. Campers pay $10 at a self-service station near the entrance, then drive onto grassy sites that line the riverbank without clear delineation.

The campground operates on a find-your-spot system, with most tent campers setting up directly beside the water. A hill ascending toward the road houses various RVs of different ages and conditions. Fire rings dot the property, and vault toilets provide the primary facilities. Video surveillance monitors the entrance, though the atmosphere remains casual and unstructured.

Anglers frequently work the stocked trout waters, with both regular and catch-and-release sections marked along the river. Tom P. notes it's "a West Virginia backwoods campground" where you "drop your money in a slot and enjoy the river." The towering Eagle Rocks overlook the water, named for a Revolutionary War soldier buried in the area and rated 5.11 for climbers.

Small shops sit about three miles in either direction for basic supplies. Campers wanting more developed facilities might consider Smoke Hole Canyon to the north.

A basic riverfront campground with $10 self-pay camping that appeals to those who enjoy roughing it. Guests commonly noted the simple amenities and beautiful river location for fishing and relaxation.

Great for a night

Was coming back from fishing and need a place to sleep without paying for a hotel. Great place honestly. I don’t really have anything negative to say about it. At $10 and fishing, I’ll definitely be back.

♥️

We have been coming to Eagle Rock for years. Most of the people change every year but there are some that have permanent campers here. A few rude people this year but we still enjoyed our time. It doesn’t have all the amenities that some would want. If you enjoy roughing it then ER is worth camping at.

It's cheap and scenic

Stayed one night in a tent right next to the river. It is what it is, a West Virginia backwoods campground. $10 will get ya a nights stay. Like previously said drop your money in a slot and enjoy the river. Nothing special or pretty just a cool little spot to lay your head

Primitive campground, great base for fishing or hunting

This campground is situated just off the road through beautiful Smoke Hole Canyon (a sharp turn if you're northbound). The entrance has video surveillance and there is a self-pay station at a tree on on your way in. Pay your $10 and drive in to set up. Sites are grassy, not clearly delineated, and line the river bank. Find a spot and set up. The hill ascending to the road has a number of RVs of varying age and conditions. Vault toilet & portapotty are available, but no other amenities except fire rings.

The South Branch of the Potomac forms the other border of the campground and its not uncommon to see fisherman in the river, The river is stocked with trout and there are some areas with catch and release instructions. This site will give you some additional information about licensing: Fishing Smoke Hole Canyon

Eagle Rocks, named after a Revolutionary War soldier buried in the area tower over the river. I don't climb, but I did see a note indicating that it's a 5.11 rating

There are small shops about 3 miles in either direction if you forgot something basic. To the north, if you're looking for something to explore on a rainy day, consider a visit to Smoke Hole Caverns
