Hiking enthusiasts will find logging trails within walking distance of Midway Campground, a small Forest Service site with just five sites tucked into the forested terrain of Umatilla National Forest. The campground sits 15 miles from town along what reviewers describe as a scenic drive through the mountains. With both drive-in and boat-in access available, the site draws campers seeking a quieter alternative to busier destinations, though Memorial Day weekend brings steady traffic from dispersed campers using the single vault toilet facility.
The compact layout means campers often have the place to themselves during non-holiday periods, according to visitor reports. One clean vault toilet serves the entire campground, but no water is available on-site. Campfires are permitted at each site, which come equipped with picnic tables. The forested setting provides natural shade, while nearby dirt roads lead to dispersed camping areas with elevated views for those willing to venture further from the main road.
Nick B. notes the campground has "plenty of logging trails to hike within walking distance, and more a short drive away." The $8 nightly fee makes this an affordable base camp for exploring the surrounding national forest. Several other campgrounds operate nearby, including Tepee Campground and Panjab Campground. Bring your own water and expect cool evenings even during warm summer days.
Description
At Midway’s high elevation of 6,000 feet, snow pack levels are higher here than other campgrounds on the Pomeroy Ranger District of the Umatilla National Forest. Opportune hiking trails are connected to this campground for convenient accessibility. Please Leave-No-Trace.
