George Washington National Forest encompasses Camp Roosevelt, a US Forest Service campground that holds the distinction of being the first Civilian Conservation Corps site ever established. Located in Fort Valley, this forested campground operates from May through mid-October with sites ranging from free to $10 per night. The rough access road leads to approximately 10 spacious, level sites equipped with large fire pits and cooking grates.
Campers should expect road noise throughout the night, as sites sit adjacent to the main road. Water spouts may not function reliably, though two well-maintained portable toilets serve the campground. A mountain lookout provides views just five minutes away by vehicle. For those seeking more amenities, #1 Rock Tavern River Kamp offers full-service camping about two miles southeast.
Description
Overview
Camp Roosevelt Campground is the site of the first Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in the Nation. Follow the path through the CCC camp and view the foundations where the actual buildings once stood. Proud and lofty oak trees create the perfect atmosphere for enjoying a simple picnic or camping out with friends or family. This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site. Once on-site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by scanning a QR code using the Recreation.gov mobile app, and the Scan and Pay feature. If this option is available, you will need to first download the free Recreation.gov mobile app https://www.recreation.gov/mobile-app prior to your arrival as some remote areas have limited or no cellular service.
