Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Philpott Lake

Salthouse Branch Campground on Philpott Lake permits pets throughout its hillside camping areas, offering both RV and tent sites with electric hookups. The campground features clean facilities with heated showers appreciated by dog owners during cooler weather. Sites remain relatively level despite the sloping terrain, with multiple built-out flat areas perfect for setting up camp with pets. Campers can choose from waterfront options or more wooded sites in the upper sections, all with standard picnic tables and fire rings. Horseshoe Point Campground similarly welcomes pets but maintains restrictions against dogs near swimming areas, requiring owners to keep pets leashed during beach visits. The Dyrt includes reviews of campgrounds near Philpott Lake, Virginia.

Philpott Lake's pet-friendly camping options provide water access for dogs via boat ramps adjacent to campgrounds, though swimming restrictions apply at designated beach areas. The Corps of Engineers manages several campgrounds around the lake with consistent pet policies requiring leashes and proper waste disposal. Tent campers with dogs particularly appreciate the natural setting of the lower camping loop at Salthouse Branch, which offers more privacy among trees while maintaining proximity to facilities. Camping with pets remains available year-round at several locations, though Salthouse Branch operates seasonally from March through October. Wildlife encounters are common in the wooded surroundings, making secure leashing essential for pet safety.

    Fancy Gap-Blue Ridge Parkway KOA

    Nice Place, hard to navigate

We stayed here for vacation last year. There’s a nice dog park, and the facilities are clean. My only negative was that they had us camp up on the top of the hill and it was difficult to navigate back down, with some very sharp turns for our fifth wheel. They seemed to have some nice amenities, and the staff was very friendly.

    Love's RV Hookup-Elliston VA 574

If you must stop, truck stop

I really like what loves is providing RVs. Groceries, gas, Arby’s, private showers, dog park and full hookups for a reasonable price. I’m a single female in a van, I wasn’t about to test out the private showers, but they have a great app to order food reserve your space and reserve a shower. Noise from road and trucks, but that’s to be expected - it’s a truck stop not a state park. I would stop here again if I needed a place to hook up, dump, and fill my propane.

    Fancy Gap-Blue Ridge Parkway KOA

    FANTASTIC!

I typically steer clear of KOA's because most of the sites are super close together. This KOA is different! There is a row towards the front that are pretty close together, but I think they use those for one-nighters. We were in a tent and loved our spot. The staff was UNBELIEVABLY awesome and nice. They have a pool, a pond, a playground, a dog park, and a great camp store. The bathrooms and laundry room are exceptionally clean. If you order ice or firewood, they bring it to your site. They also have food you can order and they will bring it to your site. I am sure there are many things I am forgetting, but this is a must stay and we will be back.

    Great place!!

Great spot for tent camping! Loved the hillside spots bc of all the trees and the multiple levels that the spots are on. They are all built out and flat. Bathrooms are clean and campground was quiet. I had issues finding out if pets were allowed... they are! My dog and I had an awesome time and we will be back for sure.

Guide to Philpott Lake

Philpott Lake covers 2,880 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains with 100 miles of shoreline at 974 feet elevation. The Corps of Engineers maintains multiple campgrounds around this Franklin County reservoir with varying levels of amenities. Water temperatures remain comfortable for swimming from late May through early September.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At COE Philpott Lake Goose Point Park, anglers have access to excellent lake fishing. "There is a clean sandy beach for swimming, and a boat launch with a pier," notes Darlene C., highlighting the convenient boat access.

Hiking trails: Multiple trail systems surround Philpott Lake campgrounds. At Fairy Stone State Park Campground, campers find diverse hiking options. Ryan Z. states the park has "trails that surround the campground" making it easy to explore directly from your site.

Lake activities: Beyond swimming restrictions at designated beaches, various water sports are accessible. "We canoed and that was fun," reports Anne F. from Salthouse Branch, showing that despite alcohol restrictions, water recreation remains a highlight.

Fairy stone hunting: A unique activity near Philpott Lake is searching for fairy stones. "We hunted and found fairy stones which made the trip that much more fun," shares Bridget H., describing this distinctive regional experience outside the standard lake activities.

What campers like

Lakeside camping options: Horseshoe Point offers prime waterfront sites. "Some of the sites are waterfront. The campground has 18 sites with water and electricity," explains Denise, noting the variety of site options available.

Clean facilities: Despite remote locations, most campgrounds maintain reliable facilities. According to Patrice at Salthouse Branch Campground, "We always enjoy staying at Corp campgrounds when we travel. The sites are consistently level, spacious, with reliable facilities (dumpstation, electric service, potable water, bath house."

Multiple swimming areas: Beyond beaches, several locations offer roped swimming zones. "The campground has 2 swimming areas that are roped off, with life jackets provided," reports Denise at Horseshoe Point, highlighting safety measures in place.

Wooded privacy: Upper camping areas typically offer more seclusion than waterfront sites. "Great spot for tent camping! Loved the hillside spots bc of all the trees and the multiple levels that the spots are on," Paula J. shares about Salthouse Branch, confirming the appeal of elevated camping areas.

What you should know

Alcohol restrictions: Corps of Engineers campgrounds enforce strict no-alcohol policies. "The police visited us bc we were drinking outside of our camper. He was very nice and explained no alcohol allowed. This is clearly stated," reports Anne F. from Salthouse Branch.

Limited cell service: Many campgrounds have minimal or no connectivity. "There is no WiFi and my T-Mobile was useless there," notes Gail B. at Horseshoe Point, emphasizing the remote nature of these locations.

Narrow access roads: Some campgrounds have challenging approaches. At Salthouse Branch, one camper cautions "The roads going into the campground is very narrow and steep up and downs. My breaks were gone by the time I got to the entrance."

Seasonal operations: While some areas remain open year-round, others have limited seasons. Horseshoe Point operates "from early may-late sep" according to their listing information.

Tips for camping with families

Lake activities for kids: Rocky Knob Campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the region with children. "Located on the BRP not far from where it intersects with US-58. Sites are primitive, very shady," notes Cliff M., highlighting the scenic setting that appeals to families.

Playgrounds and recreation: Family-friendly amenities exist at several locations. "The kids love the playground!" exclaims Tamara B. about Salthouse Branch, mentioning one of the amenities particularly appealing to families with young children.

Beach swimming access: Designated swimming areas provide safe water recreation. "There is a nice swimming area, boat ramp and dock in the loop," Glenn F. describes at Goose Point, noting the convenient beach access directly from camping areas.

Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds offer ranger programs and learning experiences. "We always enjoy visiting Salthouse Branch! Facilities are clean, staff is friendly and helpful," reports Tamara B., highlighting the consistent quality that brings families back.

Tips for RVers

Site selection for larger rigs: Smith Mountain Lake State Park Campground accommodates various RV sizes. "RVs need to reserve loop 'C' as A and B loop are not easily accessible and are more suited for tent campers," advises Darlene C. about specific loop recommendations.

Hookup availability: Water and electric hookups are standard at most developed sites. "The site has water, 50,30,and 110 hookups. No sewer. There is a dumpsite close," notes one reviewer at Salthouse Branch.

Leveling considerations: Many campsites require adjustments for level parking. "Most sites required a little help to get level," reports ralph P. at Horseshoe Point, highlighting a common challenge in the mountainous terrain.

Reservation timing: Popular waterfront sites fill quickly during peak season. "The bottom loop books up far in advance," warns Lauren L., suggesting early reservations for prime dog-friendly campgrounds at Philpott Lake, particularly for sites with lake views.
