Part of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail system, Stony Brook Backcountry Shelter operates as a hike-in facility managed by the National Park Service. The basic eight-person shelter sits alongside multiple level tent sites that can accommodate several tents each. A newly constructed privy provides more space than typical trail facilities.
Water access requires a short walk north to Stony Brook, where hikers find reliable flow and a small swimming hole deep enough for basic washing. The site includes a bear box for food storage, an uncommon feature among Vermont AT shelters. Campers seeking established campgrounds near Killington will find Gifford Woods State Park Campground four miles west with vehicle access and full amenities.
Description
Just like the Long Trail, the Vermont Appalachian Trail has shelters that can be used by hikers. Winturri Shelter, Stony Brook Shelter, Thistle Hill Shelter, and Happy Hill Shelter are all available on a first come, first serve basis for hikers to spend the night.
This is a cabin style shelter with a wooden floor.
