Mexican Hat Rocks Dry Camping

Dirt roads lead to 5-7 dispersed camping spots beyond the paved RV area off Highway 163. Some sites sit near the San Juan River, though reaching the water requires bushwhacking through vegetation. Recent road grading has created berms that may limit pullout access, and private property signs have appeared in some areas.

The narrow, winding dirt roads make RV access challenging beyond the initial paved section, though one reviewer successfully navigated a 34-foot motorhome to the sites. Campers can build fires and bring pets and alcohol to this free dispersed area. Mexican Hat Rock offers another nearby option with easier access.

Not sure what's going on but the dirt road has been graded, building up large berms so as one cannot pull off and camp. Signs all over stating "Private property"

34’ class c

The road in seemed scratchy but it’s really not, once to the camp sites their is plenty of room to negotiate a 34’ motorhome in the dark.

Free camping outside Mexican Rock

This was a great option for free dispersed camping around Mexican Rock. Once you turn off the highway, there a few paid spots for RV/Campers but beyond that there were 5-7 dispersed spots. Some along the river, but lots of bushwhacking to get to it so I wouldn't call it a river spot. I wouldn't recommend RV or Campers beyond the paved spot due to dirt roads and very windy/narrow path to get down there.
