OHV enthusiasts will find extensive trail networks radiating from Mammoth Dispersed, a free Forest Service campground that accommodates everything from tents to big rigs along Mammoth Creek. Located about 10 miles down a gravel road in Dixie National Forest, the area features 4-5 designated sites near the water plus additional tent-only spots at the road's end.
Mammoth Creek runs directly through the camping area, providing a constant water source and background noise that some find soothing while others describe as quite loud at night. The creek flows fast during spring runoff, creating what one camper noted as "extremely fast and very loud" conditions. Several vault toilets serve the area, and fire rings are available at most sites when fire restrictions allow. The tall pines provide shade and cooler temperatures even during summer months.
Road access varies by route, with campers reporting the southern approach through the subdivision area as more manageable for RVs than the steep, narrow northern route from Panguitch. Amanda L. recommends "coming in the back way where Aspen Meadow turns into Mammoth creek" for those pulling trailers, noting they "had a heck of time navigating the steep hill with the camper" on the other route.
Weekend crowds can be intense, particularly during holidays when ATV traffic increases significantly. Sites fill quickly on Friday mornings, though weekdays offer more solitude. The area sees heavy use despite its remote feel, and as one reviewer observed, "It's also disappointing to see how many visitors don't clean up after themselves." The campground sits within easy reach of Mammoth Cave and provides access to Panguitch Lake about 20 minutes north.
This spot works best for campers comfortable with primitive conditions who want creek access and OHV trail proximity without paying camping fees.
