Balsar Gulch Dispersed Camping

Old tents, trash, 9mm casings, pretty pine trees that have been shot up, good pine trees cut down for fire wood. Remnants of old deer carcasses, bones , hair, but the trees are pretty and it was quiet will I was here during the week.

Gorgeous spot right off the paved Sheridan Lake Road. We stayed for a week while hiking & UTV-ing. Several spots available (maybe 8 if with a group?) and two other campers came and went while we were there. We were all far enough away that it didn't disturb the solitude. Cows visited on the last day! :-D We camped by the stream. 1 caution = if driving a long rig, it's a sharp right hand turn off Sheridan Lake Road coming from Rapid City. Very doable --just be ready.

We camped at this site based on location and wanting a dispersed site. Easy access and other sites available. We were the only ones there and it was so relaxing. Did some hikes around Lake Sheridan and Custer State Park. Really enjoyed it.

I believe that there’s only two sites but there might be more if you take the road to the left after you enter. I’m just not sure because I didn’t go down that way. I camped at the far end campsite and it was perfect for a tent. If you have a pickup truck with a pod you’re good for the back spot. The first spot closer to the road is much better suited for an RV. It’s quiet and peaceful at night. There was some trash left behind by some previous people but it was just some mayo packets pretty stupid not to pick those up honestly.

This site is big and relatively flat. There are three other dispersed campers here while I write this. There’s enough space where our spot still feels private. There is a creek passing by the edge of the open area.
