El Yunque National Forest Camp Sites

Part of the US Forest Service's El Yunque National Forest, these established campsites provide access to Puerto Rico's only tropical rainforest. The forest requires drive-in or walk-in access depending on the specific site, and pets are not permitted throughout the area.

Campers use this location as a base for day hikes through rainforest trails that connect to waterfalls and elevated viewpoints. Trail conditions can become slippery after rain, as one visitor noted when recommending plenty of water and snacks for full-day excursions. The forest's Coqui frogs provide constant background sounds, and some trails experienced closures following Hurricane Maria damage. For different camping experiences in the region, Hacienda Monte Rey sits 2 miles east of the forest boundary.

Truly a wonder

On a much needed vacation, we went out for a few day hikes out here and it did not disappoint!!! Amazing rainforest views and hikes that wind through the beautiful landscape that is Puerto Rico. I would 100% advise anyone going to the area to check it out. Bring a good mount of water some snacks and make a full day of it! be careful, trails can get a little slippery after some rain.

Off the beaten path!

I wish I could have visited before Hurricane Maria!! This place is absolutely beautiful! Some trails were blocked off due to damage from Maria but what we did get to experience was well worth our time! I was lucky and had a local friend that took us to some places that most tourists don’t know about. Although we weren’t allowed to camp we still had an amazing time. From the water falls and beautiful foliage to the Coqui sing for us all day. We saw a lot of guided groups on the trail so I was glad I know a local. The trails are clean and well maintained even in spite of the recent hurricane. I can’t wait to go back!!
