Surrounded by towering pines and hemlocks within Bald Eagle State Forest, Raymond B. Winter State Park Campground sits beside a mountain stream-fed lake in central Pennsylvania's forested landscape. The 60-site campground accommodates RVs up to 45 feet with full hookups, while walk-in tent sites offer closer access to Halfway Lake Dam and its cold, clear waters.
Campers find themselves in what Greg S. describes as a forest where "huge pines and hemlock, ferns everywhere" create natural separation between sites. Several sites provide direct creek access, though these tend to be closer together than the more private options like sites 57 and 18. The small lake functions more like a large pond, fed by two mountain streams that keep water temperatures brisk even in summer. A sandy beach area includes a playground and seasonal concession stand offering food and beach supplies.
The park provides equipment loans from the office, including fishing gear for targeting bass and trout in the lake, plus mountain bikes and snowshoes depending on season. Hiking trails range from the easy Nature Trail suitable for children to the more challenging Overlook Trail. Winter activities include skiing when snow conditions allow. The campground operates from the second Friday in April through mid-December, with reservations available for the $20-52 nightly rate.
DCNR staff actively patrol the grounds, strictly enforcing the $5 day-use fee for visiting vehicles and state park alcohol prohibition. The facility maintains clean bathhouses and provides free firewood behind the park office. For additional camping options in the region, campers can explore places to camp around Hartleton or check nearby Holiday Pines Campground. The combination of mountain forest setting and lake access makes this a solid base camp for families seeking both water activities and woodland exploration.
