Water sports enthusiasts will find Lake Billy Chinook just a short walk from their campsite at Deschutes River Campground, where the canyon setting creates a dramatic backdrop for boating, swimming, and fishing. The campground sits within a quiet canyon surrounded by high rock walls, about a mile from the lake via a well-maintained trail.
The 87 sites spread across three loops offer varying levels of privacy and terrain. Loop B backs up to a rocky hillside where campers frequently spot deer, while Loop C provides elevated views across the canyon. Sarah S. notes that "some spots are better than others but the C loop had amazing views." Sites along the eastern edge of loops feature mature pines and boulders suitable for hammocks and climbing, though most sites have limited privacy between neighbors.
The Tam-a-lau Trail begins directly from the campground, offering a one-mile climb to the ridge followed by an optional six-mile loop with mountain and lake views. A playground, basketball hoop, and amphitheater with weekend educational programs keep families busy, while a large fenced dog area accommodates pets. Hot solar-powered showers and clean restrooms consistently earn praise from visitors. Tj B. describes "one of the nicest restroom facilities yet" with "hot solar powered huge shower rooms, kept very clean."
The road down to the campground involves a steep descent that some find challenging, particularly those with vertigo or larger RVs. Sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet with full hookups available. Summer temperatures can be intense in this high desert location, though nights cool considerably. The campground operates from mid-May through mid-September, with reservations recommended during peak season when the facility often reaches capacity.
This campground works best for families seeking water recreation and campers comfortable with close-quarters camping in exchange for convenient lake access and well-maintained facilities.
