Within BLM Land managed by the Socorro Field Office, Datil Well Recreation Area Campground sits a quarter-mile off US-60, providing a quiet base for exploring central New Mexico's high desert country. The 22-site campground operates year-round at $5 per night, with America the Beautiful passes reducing the cost to $2.50. Three sites offer electrical hookups, though these fill quickly on busy weekends.
Most sites feature ramadas for shade and generous spacing between neighbors. "The sites are pretty far from each other, and almost all have a ramada," notes Lisa M.. Pull-through options accommodate larger RVs, while some sites in wooded areas provide more privacy. Sites in open areas include concrete telescope pads for stargazing equipment. Solar-powered vault toilets stay lit at night, and water spigots are distributed throughout the campground, though not at individual sites.
A 3.25-mile loop trail begins at the campground's edge, leading to three viewpoints with moderate difficulty. October visitors can collect fallen pinyon pine nuts along the trails. The Very Large Array radio telescope sits nearby for day trips, while Datil Wells Campground offers another option just southeast. Eagle Guest Ranch provides fuel, basic supplies, and dining within a short drive.
The campground operates first-come, first-served with a camp host on-site. Cell service reaches most areas, and a small lending library offers WiFi during limited hours. Water service shuts off during colder months, typically by late November. No dump station exists on-site, requiring trips to nearby towns for RV waste disposal.
For those wanting electrical hookups or exploring places to camp around Datil, Jackson Park Campground near Pie Town provides another high-desert camping experience.
Description
Datil Well Recreation Area Campground includes one of 15 water wells along the old Magdalena Livestock Driveway. The old cattle trail was established in the 1800s and stretched 120 miles from Springerville, Arizona, to Magdalena, New Mexico. The area includes 3 miles of hiking trails in pinyon-juniper and ponderosa pine woodlands, with scenic views of the San Augustin Plains. The trail and vistas also offer an occasional glimpse of wildlife in a setting of quiet and solitude. You can close your eyes and almost hear the cattle lowing as they settle in for the night. Please leave a clean camp and respect the facilities and natural surroundings. Pack it in. Pack it out.
