Alamo Road Dispersed

BLM Land — Roswell Field Office includes Alamo Road Dispersed, a free camping area that accommodates big rigs and allows campfires. Located about 11 miles east of town, this dispersed site sits along a dirt road that sees regular traffic from locals and other campers. The immediate pullout to the left of Alamo Road provides the easiest access, while secondary roads branch off for those seeking more secluded spots.

Road conditions vary throughout the area. The main Alamo Road remains passable for RVs, but side roads become rougher with small ditches that challenge larger rigs. "The roads need graded but...BLM land and gov cuts," notes one camper who explored multiple sites during a five-day stay. Cell service reaches the area, and campers can drive ATVs and UTVs to explore despite limited marked trails.

Litter presents an ongoing issue at some sites, particularly spent shell casings and debris left by target shooters who use the area. Several reviewers mention cleaning up trash during their stays. Wind and dust from passing vehicles affect sites close to the main road, making spots farther back more comfortable. For supplies and services, camping spots outside Roswell provide access to major retailers within 20 minutes.

The area works well for RV travelers seeking a free overnight stop or base camp for exploring southeastern New Mexico, though campers should come prepared with trash bags and expect some road noise.

Campers regularly cited spacious sites suitable for RVs and convenient access to Roswell supplies. However, multiple reviews noted concerns about road conditions and significant litter from target shooting activities throughout the area.

A fair spot out of Roswell

It is windy and dusty do to cars and trucks racing up the dirt road. So park away from the road is your best bet. Not to crowded

Couple of choices for our 43' RV

We stayed for 5 nights--there's a spot immediately to the left off of Alamo road. We pulled in during a freak snow 😳, so went exploring in the truck the next day. That immediate spot was easy to pull into with plenty of space --didn't unhook the road. But --Alamo Road is pretty busy, so we then moved to a spot off the main road --we turned down the 2nd road to the left (toward a natural gas pump?) and enjoyed a huge spot there. The roads weren't suitable for our RV after that (bumpy) and with small ditches on each side to get through to get to sites, we couldn't make those but other campers did & were out camping. The roads need graded but...BLM land and gov cuts. 🤷🏻‍♀️ As another reviewer said, it's sad that in some places there's a ton of garbage--too much for one person to pick up. It seems that people use it for a city dump out where they target shoot. Our campsite had some trash but wasn't terrible, and we left no trace & cleaned up what had been left there. Plenty of places to drive our utv to explore a bit even though the Polaris app shows no trails in the area.

Beautiful views but garbage everywhere

I spent 2 nights here and while the sunsets are something to write home about, I clearly stayed in a place where locals use it as target practice. Shelf casings and garbage abound. I don't carry big trash bags with me but I picked up what I could. I would not discourage people from staying here. If I ever come back to the area, I will probably stay here again....I will just bring a bunch of trash bags with me.

Easy access spot

The road is much less worn than we're used to. Not too many campsites but could easily park a camper. Roswell, with many supply chains within 20 minutes including big R, Tractor supply, Walmart and various sporting goods stores. Not a bad spot to crash heading to the next one. Alamo road does wind on a quite a bit further than we traveled down it, so there may be even better options.
