Peavine Road Dispersed Camping

Rough dirt roads and scattered pull-offs define this dispersed camping area in the foothills northwest of Reno. Campers drive along rutted tracks to find informal spots with open views across the valley below, though the terrain limits options for larger RVs or trailers.

The area draws mixed reactions from visitors, with some appreciating the quiet atmosphere and valley overlooks while others note maintenance issues. Multiple reviewers mention trash accumulation and abandoned vehicles scattered throughout the camping zones. Road conditions vary, with deeper ruts in sections that may challenge lower-clearance vehicles. Cell service reaches most areas, and campers can build fires where safe.

Heather H. found it "quiet and felt safe" despite noting "lots of trash and casings" in the area. The exposed location can experience strong winds common to this elevation and terrain. Gunshots from target shooting occur in the distance, as reported by several visitors. No formal amenities exist—no fire rings, tables, or restrooms.

This spot works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive conditions who need a free overnight option. Those seeking developed facilities or pristine natural settings may prefer exploring other camping spots near Reno or established campgrounds with maintained amenities.

Complete trash dump

It's sad where we have this public land to camp on and people just dump tons and tons of trash and abandoned cars and demolished cars on the property would not recommend going. There's some more BLM land about 15 to 20 minutes north on Red Rock road.

Don’t recommend

Trash everywhere, homeless camps, didn’t feel safe but I only drove a half mile in and turned around.

Lots of trash and shells

I live 10 minutes away, so I checked it out. It's sketchy driving in with a lot of trailers and cars along the road closer to the main road. There may or may nor have been people in them. We didn't see people walking around except one guy who was walking his dog on the dirt road and another guy nearby with a table next to his car. Maybe he was flying a drone. The dirt road was very rutted in a few areas. No big deal, but I was in my Jeep Trailhawk 4x4. I didn't have my trailer with me. The view of the city is great, but that's it. The area to pull off is not that big, so I think it would be crowded with more than 2 other trailers. It wasn't windy at all when we were there, but I'm sure it could be because it can be very windy in this area. I wouldn't stay here unless I absolutely had to for the night. I did hear gunshots in the distance. We only stayed a few minutes to take a few pictures. No amenities like fire rings or tables.

Better than a $90/night casino parking lot!

Feels weird driving in, but there are some pull offs that have good views of the valley. Very open. Lots of trash and casings, but was quiet and felt safe. Good place to pull over if you are in the Reno area and just need to sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my RV or trailer for dispersed camping in the Dog Valley area of Nevada?

While RVs and trailers can technically access the Peavine Road dispersed camping area, it's not ideal for larger rigs. The road conditions may be challenging, and the available pull-offs might not accommodate larger vehicles comfortably. The open terrain does provide space, but the overall conditions and safety concerns make this location less than ideal for RV camping. Consider alternative dispersed camping locations in the greater Reno area that might offer more suitable terrain and safer conditions for RVs and trailers.

Where is dispersed camping allowed on Peavine Road near Reno, Nevada?

Dispersed camping is allowed along Peavine Road near Reno, Nevada, with several pull-off areas that offer views of the valley. The camping areas are located on public land northwest of Reno. There are various spots as you drive in, with more options further from the main road. However, the areas closer to the main road tend to have more permanent-looking setups and may feel less suitable for overnight camping. For potentially better dispersed camping options in the area, consider checking BLM land about 15-20 minutes north on Red Rock Road instead.

What are the rules and regulations for free BLM dispersed camping near Reno?

When dispersed camping on BLM land near Reno, follow standard regulations: camp at least 200 feet from water sources, stay a maximum of 14 days in a 28-day period, and practice Leave No Trace principles. Pack out all trash and waste. Unfortunately, the Peavine Road area has significant issues with accumulated trash, abandoned vehicles, and improper waste disposal. Fire restrictions may apply seasonally, so check current BLM fire regulations before your trip. No permits are typically required for dispersed camping, but always verify current regulations with the local BLM office before your visit.
