Johnsrud Park FAS sits along the Blackfoot River where paved road access gives way to dirt, creating a hub for both day use and dispersed camping. Managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, this fishing access site draws boaters, tubers, and anglers who use the concrete boat ramp and ample parking areas. The site functions as both a launch point for river activities and a stopping point for those floating downstream.
Campsites spread among trees and vegetation near the water, though one recent visitor noted that "no camping allowed" signs have appeared, indicating potential policy changes regarding overnight use. The river provides a defined swimming hole with deeper water, while cliffs across the main channel offer jumping opportunities for strong swimmers. "To get the cliffs you have to cross the main channel of the river," explains one reviewer, emphasizing the need for solid swimming skills.
Summer brings increased traffic from shuttle vehicles serving the popular Blackfoot River float route. The site includes pit toilets, picnic tables, and allows pets. Cell service reaches the area, making it accessible for those needing connectivity. Sites closer to the water tend to fill first during peak season.
For dispersed camping options, Lower Blackfoot River Dispersed - BLM - PERMANENTLY CLOSED sits just south, though its closure status should be verified before planning. Check current camping regulations before arrival, as policies may have changed recently.
