Ennis Montana FWP

Just south of downtown Ennis, this Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks campground sits directly on the Madison River at a working boat launch and fishing access site. The 11 numbered sites spread across mowed grass and gravel areas, with four campsites positioned right along the riverbank for immediate water access.

Sites vary considerably in surface and layout—some feature gravel parking pads while others rely on grass or dirt areas that can accommodate multiple vehicles and tents. "Fishing must be good here as this site always appears full when I drive by," notes Dexter I.. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and stays busy with both overnight campers and day-use fishing traffic accessing the boat launch.

Two vault toilets serve the area, and each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. RVs up to 25 feet can navigate the layout, though larger rigs should scout available space before committing to a site. Cell service remains strong due to the proximity to town, and campers can easily walk into Ennis for supplies or dining. Highway noise carries across the water from the nearby bridge, particularly noticeable at night from riverside sites.

The campground closes to overnight camping from December through April each year. For additional overnight options, campers can explore camping near Ennis or check nearby Madison Valley Campground.

Many visitors highlighted excellent river access and convenient walking distance to Ennis. Some campers noted concerns about uneven sites and highway noise, though spacious areas and clean facilities were appreciated.

Decent for a short stay

Plenty of cell signal as it is right next to the town. You can walk into town if you like. 2 clean pit toilets, 11 spots. Heavy day use for the boat launch but most sites are away from that area. No wood to scrounge, although burn ban during my visit. On the madison river so great for fishing. Also Ennis lake is only 6 miles.

Although a small town there are a couple gas stations and a decent sized grocery. Busy on the weekends and you can hear card on the highway but there are few at night.

Sites are mowed down and open. 7 thru 11 can hold several vehicles and tents. For groups get 10&11 together or 7&8.

Plenty of sun for solar, large shade trees at some sites, easy starlink connect.

Lovely river spot walking distance to Ennis

I have been camping here with my family since I was a child. There is a nice boat take out/launch, and about a dozen campsite of various sizes. About four campsites are right on the river.

Day use only in winter.

If you drive through the campground at the “back” (south) end there is a trail that leads along the bank of the river for a bit.

Heard lots of owls at night. Some light pollution from town. Saw herons flying to their rookery nearby from our campsite.

Good spot close to town

Great access to the Madison river. The site is very busy from all of the fishing traffic and there is some noise being this close to town. The spots were spacious with decent privacy and the latrine was recently cleaned.

Convenient

This campground is conveniently located near downtown Ennis, Montana. While you're close enough to town to run and get coffee in the morning, your spot will feel tucked back by the river. The only downside of this campground is that occasionally throughout the night you can hear cars and semi-trucks passing over the nearby bridge. Our camp spot was close to the bridge so maybe if you were further back in the campground it wouldn't be as noticeable. Across the river, from our camp spot, we could easily see residential homes. They are nice homes but it doesn't give you a completely secluded feeling because of that.

Camp and fish along the Madison river

Ennis fishing access site is located on the Madison River just on the south edge of town. This is a First come, First serve campground that is walking distance to the town of Ennis. Some sites sit along the river, some spots are more private toward the back of the campground. It appears not much effort was placed in making this site a campground, sites are unlevel and parking pads vary from gravel, to dirt or grass. This is a dry campground like most FAS sites. A small vault toilet serves the area, site are numbered and have a picnic table and appear to all have rock fire rings. Fishing must be good here as this site always appears full when I drive by. Several spots appeared to have nice grassy areas for tents. If you have a large RV you might want to park at a parking area at the entrance and walk in to make sure there is a place big enough for you as the layout of the campground might get a bit tight for a larger RV. The fishing access site is closed to camping from December 1st through April 31st every year.
