Description
Located on the Thornapple River in the heart of Michigan's Barry County, situated comfortably between Grand Rapids, Lansing, Battle Creek, and Kalamazoo, lies a place that makes you wonder why you would ever need to go further. This is the "up north" feeling — minus the long drive north.
Whispering Waters Campground sits on the banks of the Thornapple River in Hastings, Michigan — a town so genuinely charming it was ranked #68 in The 100 Best Small Towns in America, which is the kind of distinction that Hastings residents mention with quiet pride approximately four times per conversation. And honestly, fair enough.
The campground itself sprawls across 26 wooded acres of what can only be described as Pure Michigan — tall trees, grassy sites, clean air, and the kind of unhurried pace that makes your shoulders drop about two inches the moment you pull in. There's a heated pool for those who want water without the current, and direct access to the Thornapple River for those who prefer their water to have a bit more opinion about where it's going. Fishing for trophy smallmouth bass, paddling a kayak, or simply sitting on the bank watching the river do its thing are all perfectly acceptable ways to spend an afternoon here. Nobody will judge you. In fact, they'll probably join you.
For the trail-inclined, the Paul Henry Thornapple Trail connects right from the campground, offering over 9 miles of walking and biking through some of southwest Michigan's most agreeable scenery. It is, in short, an unreasonable amount of outdoor recreation for one place to offer.
Back at camp, you'll find full hookup and pull-through RV sites, spotlessly clean restrooms and hot showers, laundry facilities, a playground large enough to tire out even the most energetic children, a pavilion, a community library, and a staff so genuinely dedicated to your enjoyment that it borders on suspicious. Firewood is delivered directly to your site, because of course it is.
Whispering Waters is proudly family owned and operated — and you'll feel the difference the moment you arrive. There are no corporate scripts here, no 1-800 numbers, and nobody reading from a laminated customer service manual. Just real people who genuinely love this place and want you to love it too. First-timers are welcomed like old friends. Old friends are welcomed like family. It's the kind of warm, personal atmosphere that a thousand-location campground chain simply cannot manufacture, no matter how hard it tries — and believe us, they do try.
For 2026, Whispering Waters is excited to welcome you to a primarily seasonal camping community — a tight-knit tribe of campers who take immense pride in their sites and their neighbors. A limited number of weekly and weekend sites remain available on a space-available basis, which means if you're reading this and haven't booked yet, now would be a sensible moment to act.
This is, without any great exaggeration, Pure Michigan at its finest. Come see for yourself. The Thornapple River will be waiting, the bass will be waiting, and the staff will greet you like you've been coming here for years — even if it's your first time.
