Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Nolin River Lake

Nolin Lake State Park Campground accommodates pets at all campsites with spacious, level spots that provide direct lake access. The park features both RV sites with water and electric hookups and a primitive tent camping area with shared water sources. Dogs must remain leashed throughout the campground, and owners should bring waste bags as dedicated pet stations are limited. ['The sites are very well laid out with their own space, making it easier to manage pets while camping.'] Several campgrounds near Nolin Lake similarly welcome pets, including Moutardier Campground and Wax Campground, both offering electric hookups and water access for dogs that enjoy swimming.

Trails around Nolin Lake provide excellent opportunities for dog walking, with the KYMBA trail system offering challenging terrain for more adventurous hikers with pets. The campground's beach area sometimes restricts pets during peak season, but dogs can access the water at designated spots near lakefront campsites. Campers should come prepared with pet supplies as the closest stores are limited, and tick prevention is essential during warmer months. The relatively secluded location creates minimal light pollution, allowing for peaceful evenings by the campfire with pets after a day of hiking or water activities. The campground remains open from April through October, with reservations strongly recommended as sites book up to six months in advance, especially for weekend stays.

    Dog Creek Campground

    Woof.....

Dog Creek Campground is located on Nolin River Lake in the Kentucky countryside. No worries though this part of Kentucky is pretty well settled, Rednecks at the next campsite not withstanding.....

The Army Corp of Engineers maintains Nolin Dam, Nolin River Lake and the Campgrounds around it so the area is very well maintained, staffed by retirees and organized. However...STAY ON YOUR SITE! :) no grass camping allowed here! The whole area is very picturesque and manicured.

I liked the campground and love Nolin River Lake. The sites are level and have tables, fire rings and lantern hooks. The sites are pretty close together so okay nice with the neighbors, or at least realize you will probably get to enjoy their music and conversations with them whether you intend to or not ;)

    Moutardier

    Lakeside, fisherman's paradise

Moutardier Campground is a fisherman’s paradise. It is located on Nolin River Lake. Our site was lakeside which was beautiful (Site D6). This campsite offered electric/water hookup, fire pit, picnic table, filet table, bathrooms, and showers. There were boat ramps, a marina nearby to rent boats, and also offered a playground. Pets were welcomed (we have a dog and a hiking cat). We also had cell service (Verizon).

The view of the lake from the teardrop camper was awesome. We kayaked around the lake which was very enjoyable - saw ducks, and birds such as a grey heron. Also lots of fish jumping. There are power boats allowed in the lake. Many people were fishing from their boats, kayaks, or from the shore.

There is also a two mile hike that is in the campground called Shady Creek Trail. It looked like it had not been hiked in a while but it went through woods, small stream and had a cool rock formation at one part that you would swear is a haven for snakes. Pets enjoyed it but beware if you do not like spiders. This trail was covered in spiders and webs. No exaggeration that we cleared about a hundred spiders out of our path.

The campground was very well manicured and clean. Many of the sites were right on the lake. They were close together but did not seem it as they were on different levels and angles. Everyone was quiet and courteous. Bathrooms were very clean and well lit. The showers were “dated” - water stains but clean. Great water pressure and hot water.

There was no store on the campground but 5 minutes away was a great little restaurant called Sherry’s that we had both lunch and breakfast at. Food was delicious (fried dill pickle chips!) and one could buy bags of ice.

Overall this was a very relaxing campground. We met some wonderful people who have been coming to the campground for years. It is about 30 minutes from Mammoth Caves which was a great place to explore. Overall we gave the campground a 4 - lakeside and if you love to fish - it’s paradise.

    Wax - Nolin River Lake

    Water!

Wax Campground is located on Nolin River Lake, which is managed by the Army Corp of Engineers. Translated; well maintained, picturesque and organized.

Off Western Kentucky Parkway or KYI65 depending on where your coming from and an interesting drive through the Kentucky countryside will get you there. Nearby is Mammoth Cave National Park, also worth a visit but reserve your spelunking way ahead or you ain't getting down under;)

Wax Campground is all about the water. It's directly across from the Nolin Lodge and Wax Marina. Some of the sites are right above the lake and easily accessible with your watercraft or fishing rods.

The sites are packed in the loops they are in, you will see a lot of your neighbors when on shore. Some of the sites are better shaded then others.

One thing I learned about The Army Corp of Engineers is that they will close certain loops so that they don't have to carry them on their books. So when you arrive it may be possible to scope out another spot and change sites. I wouldn't rely on that and skip reserving though.

    Horse Cave KOA

    This is a CUTE campground!

This is a super cute campground.  Easily accessible and very clean sites!  There is a small barn with animals penned up so you can just walk up to the fence and pet them.  My wife and daughter loved that!  Great little dog park with a mini obstacle course.  We had a great little trip here and would love to come again for a longer stay!

    Wax - Nolin River Lake

    Choices...

Wax on, Wax Campground. Off Route 88, south of Leitchfield, Ky on Nolin River Lake.

Pack your yak, fishing gear and sunscreen cause it is the perfect water oriented campground. The Army Corp of Engineers do a good job of using all the designated space for campsites but still keep it picturesque and clean.

The facilities are newer and well maintained, more or less centrally located in the loops. The water is accessible from most of the sites but the Corp is a little picky about were you park your canoe and place your tent. Keep it neat.

The retirees that host the campsites are friendly and very informative, including about other campsites and the area. Talk them up for info.

We had a nice weekend enjoying the water and the interesting wild life. Cornelius got bit by a turtle when he got a little too close and we saw a turkey. Plus there are a multitude of vultures, sorta creepy, like don't lay out to sun bath you may wake up to a crowd...

The Nolin Lodge and Marina are right across the road. Dog Creek Campground is nearby. When I went to Rec Gov to reserve a site it said that the campground was full, but when I arrived a bunch of the sites were empty. The Corp closes whole loops I was told so they don't have to "count" them. But the site hosts are able to open them if their needed. Don't rely on that information though, you may want to call if you can't get a reservation and inquire.

    Nolin Lake State Park Campground

    Yaking on the Nolin

Ranger Review of Boost Oxygen at Nolin River State Park

Campground Review: Nolin River SP is one of our area favorites. Near Brownsville, Ky and a little off the beaten path. But definitely worth a visit or two.

This is not a huge State Park but it sits on Nolin River Lake and offers plenty of water sports to keep you entertained. The campgrounds were crowded when we visited.

The RV campground sits behind a gated entry and has sites that have direct lake access. Very clean and well maintained, not a lot of shade or privacy though. The primitive/basic area is crowded. The sites are walk in and placed pretty close together under cedar trees. There is a fresh water point and the beach is a short distance away. There are some sites on a small hill lakeside that give an excellent view and have picnic tables.

Obviously the main attraction is the lake, there is a lot of traffic on the lake. I kayak so at times it can be a little stressful when your wondering if that speedboat flying at you over the water sees you. I stayed close to the shoreline and did not attempt to cross the main thoroughfare. There are inlets that are less busy , you will usually see fishermen in those areas and travel is safer.

In addition to the water Kentucky Mountain Bike Assiciation(KYMBA) has built a very nice trail system in the woods. I’ve never hiked the longest loop but the two shorter ones are challenging and fun to hike. Mountain bikers would find them very technical.

On this visit we saw a new privately owned campground being built in front of the park entrance. It will be opening this season , graveled RV sites and a smal basic area for tents.

Product Review: As a Dyrt Ranger I had the opportunity to use and review Boost Oxygen https://www.boostoxygen.com/ last summer. I recently received the smaller version of Boost Oxygen to take with me adventuring. Boost comes in three sizes and the one I reviewed is the mid-size version.

I took Boost along with me on a vigorous hike in humid weather. It was more beneficial due to the humidity then the level of excercise.

Pro: smaller size fit in one of my hydration packs front pockets

    Pro: easy to use

Con: filling up those land fills

Pro: it does make recovery faster

Con: for amateur athletes/ sports enthusiasts not really sure it’s cost effective

In conclusion if you are an extreme, high altitudes, low drag kinda adventurer this would be a worthwhile investment into your performance. For me, I can just as easily sit down and take a break, I’m in no hurry;)

    Cave Country RV Campground

    Good stop along the way

Off the freeway and very convenient. Very clean. Great dog park. Do not camp close to the railroad tracks. Loud horns in the middle of the night. Not much shade. Close to Mammoth Caves.

Guide to Nolin River Lake

Nolin River Lake spreads across 5,795 acres in south-central Kentucky with 9,400 acres of surrounding public lands. The lake reaches depths of 157 feet and features limestone shorelines characteristic of Kentucky's cave country. Water temperatures typically range from 75-85°F during summer camping season, with water levels often fluctuating 5-10 feet throughout the year depending on rainfall and dam operations.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds provide bank fishing access along Nolin Lake's 163 miles of shoreline. At Wax Campground, visitors praise the fishing conditions. "Sunset over the lake was spectacular and we loved watching all the birds here. Right from our camps we could see a trip of Redheaded Woodpeckers playing as well as a mama Northern Flicker feeding her babies," shares one visitor who spotted diverse woodpecker species.

Cave exploration: The proximity to Mammoth Cave National Park makes cave tours a popular activity. "We did the twilight tour! It is also a dry county, so the only alcohol are some $5 beers near the visitor center," notes a camper who stayed at Mammoth Cave Campground. Another visitor recommends "reserve the all day guided tour with crawling about in small spaces for the best experience. Make sure your boots have enough tread or you won't be allowed to do the tour!"

Water recreation: Kayaking and paddleboarding are excellent on calm mornings. "Loved paddle boarding in the early morning before the boat traffic got going. Water was very warm," reports a visitor at Wax Campground. Many sites offer direct water access, and several campgrounds have boat ramps for larger watercraft.

What campers like

Quiet lakefront settings: The campgrounds around Nolin Lake receive praise for their peaceful atmosphere. At Dog Creek Campground, campers appreciate the lake views. "Seems all sites have a lake view. Less than half full sun-Tuesday," reports one visitor. Another adds, "Awesome campground. Great views of the lake from sites, very clean bathrooms. Sites each have a fire ring, nice picnic table, and extra 'cooking' table that was an added plus."

Spacious sites: Campers consistently mention the well-designed sites. A visitor to Moutardier Campground notes, "The sites are strategically stacked in each loop. Close but angled so you see a lot of your neighbors but a lot of scenery too." Another camper describes their lakeside site as "beautiful" and mentions the campground offers "electric/water hookup, fire pit, picnic table, filet table, bathrooms, and showers."

Wildlife viewing: The natural setting attracts various wildlife. "Lots of fish jumping. There are power boats allowed in the lake. Many people were fishing from their boats, kayaks, or from the shore," describes a Moutardier visitor. Bird watching is particularly rewarding, with herons, ducks, and woodpeckers frequently sighted.

What you should know

Tick prevention: Ticks are prevalent during warmer months. A visitor to Maple Springs Campground warns, "The park is infested with seed ticks and deer ticks. I was pulling ticks off of every inch of me even though I was coated in several layers of hardcore bug spray and my gear had been treated with permethrin. Seriously, the ticks were gnarly."

Limited amenities: Most campgrounds have basic facilities. "There are no trash cans on the sites. Also there is no laundry service either," notes a Wax Campground visitor. Another camper at Dog Creek mentions, "Lacking in restrooms and shade trees. Good for boaters as there is a nice sand bank to pull your boat up to."

Weather considerations: The area experiences sudden weather changes. "When we arrived at 815pm, the storm was raging...Then the quarter+ sized hail joined in. It was a crazy night, with a tornado hitting a town just 28 miles away," recounts a visitor at Singing Hills Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities for kids: Many campgrounds feature swimming areas ideal for families. At Dog Creek, a camper notes, "Lake is perfect for swimming, boating, or kayaking." The gentle shorelines at some sites make water access safer for children.

Fishing for beginners: Several campgrounds stock fish for catch-and-release opportunities. "The little catch-and-release pond is well-stocked and there is a catfish pay lake across the street, so our boys had plenty of fishing to keep them busy," shares a visitor at Singing Hills. Another parent mentions, "My son caught his first fish that weekend and has been begging to go back already."

Pet-friendly activities: For pet friendly camping near Nolin River Lake, there are various options for families with dogs. A visitor to Moutardier notes that "pets were welcomed (we have a dog and a hiking cat)." Some campgrounds offer hiking trails accessible from the camping areas where leashed pets are allowed.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: RV campers emphasize the importance of choosing the right site. At Houchin Ferry Campground, a visitor advises, "site selection is all important at this campsite. Some have wonderful lake access, shade, and a bit of seclusion. Others no trees, no lake, in the middle of everyone."

Leveling considerations: Many sites require proper leveling equipment. A camper at Dog Creek reports, "Gravel pads are typically fairly level; water and electric at all but tent sites." Another RVer at Diamond Caverns warns, "We went to office to say it was too unlevel for us. They kindly found us a spot that was great."

Utility management: Some campgrounds have limited electrical capacity. A Singing Hills camper explains their experience: "Our site had issues, no fire ring...our water hookup was weird…it ended up under our back bumper where we had to crawl under to connect. And we had issue with 50 amp…the plug needs attention…it turned off at 0430 and we switched to 30amp."
