Yellowwood State Forest operates 79 primitive sites across four campground loops adjacent to 133-acre Yellowwood Lake, with no reservations accepted. Campers select their site upon arrival and pay using self-service envelopes at the forest office. The campground sits seven miles west of Nashville, Indiana, accessed via gravel roads that wind through rolling forested terrain.
Sites feature fire rings with grill grates and picnic tables, scattered among wooded loops named Red Pine, White Oak Hickory, Redbud, and Black Gum. Cynthia K. notes "the best spot in Black Gum would be site 75. Large site at the end of the loop & right by the lake." Vault toilets and potable water stations serve each loop, with a dump station located in the Redbud area. The forest office rents boats and kayaks on weekends and sells firewood during limited hours.
Yellowwood Lake allows electric motor boats only and provides fishing access for bass and bluegill. Five hiking trails range from easy to rugged terrain, connecting to the longer Tecumseh Trail system. Brett B. observes "many have short trails from them to the lake edge, making for some great night fishing with a cozy fire to return to." A separate horseman's campground accommodates equestrian visitors with dedicated trail access.
Most sites accommodate smaller RVs, though several reviewers caution about unlevel terrain and tight maneuvering space for larger units. The campground typically sees light use except during major holiday weekends. Brown County State Park lies just four miles east for campers seeking more amenities. Bring exact change for the $13 nightly fee and consider visiting during weekdays for maximum solitude.
Description
Yellowwood State Forest was created in 1940 when federal land was leased to the state of Indiana. The land was deeded to the state in 1956. Prior to that time, the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Project Administration completed three lakes, a shelter house, and a residence, all still in use.
More than 2,000 abandoned and eroded acres were planted to pine (red, jack, shortleaf, white, and scotch), black locust, black walnut, white, and red oak. Red and white pines are the true northern pines and are still in good condition. The other pines are succumbing to insects, disease, and extremely cold winters.
Yellowwood Lake was completed in 1939. The 133-acre lake is about 30 feet deep.
