Brookville Lake spreads across southeastern Indiana, drawing campers who prioritize water access over campground luxury. The Army Corps of Engineers manages this established campground within Brookville Recreation Area, where sites range from $26-$33 per night and accommodate everything from tents to big rigs.
Most campers come for the lake activities, with multiple beach areas and boat rentals available during the main season. "Brookville lake nearby for boating (rentals), large beach area," notes Jim. The concession stand operates May through Labor Day, then closes for fall and winter. Hiking and biking trails wind through the property, though some reviewers report overgrowth during summer months and varying trail conditions.
Site characteristics present both advantages and challenges. Campers consistently mention the generous spacing between sites - roughly twice the distance found at private campgrounds. However, many sites sit on slopes that require careful leveling, particularly for RVs and trailers. "A few too steep to level a trailer," reports one reviewer about the more challenging spots. Full hookup sites with 50-amp service, water, and sewer remain limited and book quickly. Most sites offer 30-amp electric only, with several bathhouses providing shower facilities throughout the campground.
The one-way road system creates tight maneuvering for backing into sites positioned perpendicular to narrow roads. No pull-through sites exist. Campers note that guest parking sits far from most sites, and strict vehicle limits apply - even temporary unloading requires quick repositioning. The concrete block bathhouses show their age but maintain cleanliness, with notably strong shower pressure.
For additional options in the region, campers can explore places to camp near Brookville. Quakertown State Rec Area provides an alternative just southwest of this location.
Description
A part of the Brookville Lake -Whitewater Memorial State Park Complex, Brookville Reservoir lies in the historic east fork of the Whitewater River Valley. Brookville Lake camping is possible at two State Recreation Areas: Mounds SRA (not to be confused with Mounds State Park in Anderson) and Quakertown SRA.
The lake property has more than 25 miles of hiking trails, boating opportunities, and nationally known recreational and sport fishing. Two beaches and more than 400 campsites make this an ideal family vacation spot.
The area was purchased by the federal government for flood control and to provide a place for wildlife and recreation. More than 11,000 acres provide a variety of habitats for plants and wildlife. Brookville is one of the few sites in Indiana where walleye grow big enough for fisheries biologists to milk the females for eggs to supply walleye fry to many lakes in Indiana.
