    Grand View Campground (Targhee NF)

    Hidden Gem!

I’ve lived in Idaho Falls almost my whole life and visited Ashton and Island Park countless times and had no idea this was here! I lucked into a first come spot because someone had cancelled their online reservation and was able to stay two nights here. Dog friendly, zero cell service like at all.

I got spot 4, right next to the delightful camp hosts! Electricity at each camp site, two double sites, all the trees you could ever want! A very very quiet and peaceful campground. 10/10. Will be back.

It’s steps away from Lower Mesa Falls! Not far from Ashton if you forget something and close enough to West Yellowstone if you want to stay somewhere further from the park!

    Squirrel Meadows Cabin

Love the cabin and so much wildlife!

Squirrel Meadows Cabin in WY is a lot of fun, and great for a family. The cabin is pretty awesome, although there is no electricity- but that didn't really bother my family and I. Were did a ton of outdoor activities, that we really weren't inside the cabin a whole lot. The cabin is about 25 miles from Ashton, ID in a beautiful forest area. The cabin is surrounded by trees, and you do see quite a bit of wildlife. The fee to rent the cabin is $40 a night, which is not bad considering what you would pay for a hotel a night. The cabin does fit 6, although we had 5 people in our group and that seemed like plenty (6 might be a little crowded, but would still work!). We did a lot of outdoor activities like hiking, biking and also picked some really good berries. There was honestly something for everyone to do, which made the stay here nice. The cabin does provide bunk beds- not the most comfortable so I would suggest bringing some type of air mattress or camping pad to put down on the bed. It does have a wood stove, table, chairs, dishes, and pots. I would also suggest bringing your own garbage bags because the place does not provide this. We didn't bring any, and had to drive to the nearest town to get some. You do want to pack out your own garbage, because we later found out that you will get charged extra if you don't. You also want to put away any food you have outside because there are bears- we left a garbage bag outside and in the morning it was open and trash was everywhere! I would recommend staying here, and cant wait to come back with my family.

Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday

Huge RV spots, large store, kept up nicely

Very close to Yellowstone park. The RV spot was huge (patio space, plus grassy area with trees which was great for the dogs!) although we paid for the premium spot. Dog park was nice for the pups. No complaints at all.

    Grand View Campground (Targhee NF)

Small Idaho gem near the Tetons

This campground and the adjacent Falls were recommended to me by a local, and what a find! The campground was very small(9 sites, I think), quiet, and beautiful. The outhouse and campsites were extremely clean. All sites had electric hookup available; camping fees were $30 with hookup and $15 without. The campground is located on Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, near Ashton, Idaho, and is a short walk to The lower Falls. I will definitely return to camp at this tiny gem.

Red Rock RV Park by Open Road Resorts

    Not worth the money...stay elsewhere

Booked 6 months in advance and based it on many good reviews. Was promised a new, upgraded campground with a premium site. Found new section is not completed and under construction. Was placed on site 40, which is terribly unlevel, a muddy mess with no crush, no patio and a tree that lays disgusting bushy bug-like buds every day all over everything. The only site like this. We could not enjoy it outside at all. No dog park as advertised. Paid a good deal for a week and was very disappointed. It was far from all the attractions at Yellowstone. It takes 30 min to get to the west gate, and over an hour and half to any points in the park. People seemed nice enough. Did see a moose close by and the laundry room and store were nice. The store was way overpriced tho. West Yellowstone seemed much nicer and closer to NP. Wouldn't stay here again. So disappointed that we booked a week here. The site was horrible and I was told it was a nice site when I questioned it by staff.

Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park and Resort

Just minutes from the West Yellowstone entrance

West Yellowstone Grizzly campground is located close to the West Yellowstone entrance. It is an Rv Park, lodging, and cabins. It is also in the town of West Yellowstone which is a darling little town with so much to do. The Rv sites are full hook ups and they have picnic benches on a leveled gravel site. There are no fires allowed here and it is pet friendly. . They have WiFi and cable. The sites are pretty close together, which I did not like. There is a grass area on each site which is wonderful for dogs. There are 4 laundry rooms and clean bathrooms and showers. We stayed for 2 days and would stay again.

    Buffalo Crossing RV Park

You Pay the Price for Location

Resort prices for lackluster campground; you are paying to be at the mouth of Yellowstone, which is invaluable considering everything you want to see within the park is 1-3 hours away.

The park itself is fine - the showers and laundry work. But it’s very small with cramped spaces. We were fortunate to get Site 15 at the end of the first row, so we aren’t facing anyone’s sewer or slide outs, but one site faces the doggy waste bin and another faces the dumpster, so I could see those visitors having grievance.

There is no dog run, just a square of grass. I understand it’s difficult to provide space for pets here as it borders the park, but just be aware that your pet won’t get exercised.

What’s frustrating is we are full-timers staying here for over two weeks, and the managers indicated they won’t accept deliveries from Amazon, UPS, or FedEx. Long story short - FedEx confirmed they will deliver directly to your site. Unfortunately, I already placed a hold on the delivery and these were time sensitive items.

They give you a discount to the IMAX theater and a token for a free ice cream cone, which might satiate your need for more from this park if you’re retired or traveling with kids, but we aren’t.

Overall, I would stay here again because of the location. But like most “resorts” on the cusp of a national park, it leaves more to be desired

    Sugar City RV Park

    Sugar City RV

Very nice "state of the art" RV Park. Clean showers, nice clothes wash facilities, dog friendly with fenced run area, cat approved by "Liza", just in her trailer trash tabby space. Great access to Tetons and Yellowstone, good shopping overall in Sugar City and nearby Rexburg. But ! It's not boondocking or cheap, so we'll live with it for our Yellowstone and Teton visit

Guide to Ashton

Dispersed camping areas near Ashton, Idaho sit at elevations between 5,200-6,500 feet with temperatures that can drop below freezing even in summer months. Located within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, camping opportunities range from riverside sites along the Henry's Fork to more secluded forest settings. Summer highs average 75-85°F while overnight lows can dip into the 30s.

What to do

Fishing the Henry's Fork: Access premium trout fishing directly from Henry's Fork Rivercamp where riverfront sites offer convenient water access. "Good fly fishing spot. Surrounded by mountains. We found a spacious and clean camping spot with a rock firepit," notes one camper.

Waterfall exploration: Lower Mesa Falls sits just 100 yards from Grand View Campground, making it easily accessible for day trips. "The campground is within walking distance of Lower Mesa Falls and an easy but longer hike to Upper Mesa Falls," a visitor shares, adding that hiking to the falls "saves yourself a parking fee ($5)."

Golfing at campsite: Try a unique camping experience at Yellowstone Golf Resort where you can camp and golf at the same location. "18 hole par 3 course surrounded by rolling hills of farmer's fields," states one reviewer who appreciated the combination of recreation and camping.

What campers like

Budget-friendly options: For those seeking no-cost camping, the dispersed sites at S Antelope Flat Road offer free spots with a 14-day limit. "The perfect spot off highway to camp," according to one visitor, though they caution about "huge potholes coming in."

Clean facilities: Campground hosts at several locations maintain exceptionally well-kept grounds. At Grand View Campground, campers praise how "the hosts take extremely good care of the facilities. The vault toilets are very clean, smell great, have hand sanitizer, and actually have rugs to make them feel more like a real bathroom."

Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer generous spacing between campsites. "Riverside Campground has amazing large spots and beautiful views right by the river," one camper notes, while another mentions "good forestry in between sites" with "Lower A loop closer to the river."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate from May to September due to high elevation weather conditions. For Riverside Campground, campers should know "if you come in June, you will be rewarded with fields of wildflowers."

Limited cell service: Many forest campgrounds have no connectivity. At Grand View Campground, one camper reports "zero cell service like at all," while others mention spotty coverage depending on carrier.

Wildlife awareness: The region hosts moose, deer, and bears. Practice proper food storage using the available amenities, as one Warm River on Forest Road 150 visitor notes: "About 8 large spots with bear boxes and picnic tables and fire pits."

Bug preparation: Mosquitoes can be intense in early summer. "In June, bring mosquito repellant, the worst I've experienced since AK," warns a camper at Warm River on Forest Road 150, though interestingly, another camper notes that at Riverside Campground "it was the first spring hatching of the mosquitoes. In other places, it was swarms of them!!! Not here. At least, not on the loop close to the river."

Tips for camping with families

Easy access waterfront: Warm Slough offers family-friendly water access. "Great place to fish, kayak, or float the river," mentions one reviewer, while another notes "Right on the banks of the slough and there's even a resident moose!"

Educational opportunities: Incorporate learning with visits to nearby geologic features. "If you fish or want to float Henry's Fork of the Snake River, this may be a good spot for multiple nights. The morning was beautiful - cold with mist coming off the river," shares a Warm Slough camper.

Pet friendly camping options: Most campgrounds near Ashton welcome pets with standard leash requirements. At Riverside Campground, the family-friendly atmosphere extends to four-legged companions with river access where dogs can cool off during warm days.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Electric hookups are available at several campgrounds. Grand View Campground provides "power at each site" with "only 9 sites total in the campground and one of those is occupied by the hosts."

Road conditions: Access roads to dispersed camping require careful driving. At S Antelope Flat Road, even with free camping, one visitor cautions about "huge potholes coming in."

Space considerations: Site dimensions vary significantly between campgrounds. For RVers visiting Henry's Fork Rivercamp, "There were plenty of RVs camping in open areas right by the entrance but if you follow the dirt road, there's more secluded spots within the trees," though they caution "the road was a bit rocky, but our sedan made it through with some careful maneuvering."
