The drive to Goodenough Creek requires navigating a steep, winding dirt road that climbs five miles from the highway, with the final stretch presenting tight turns through a gate that challenges larger RVs. This forested BLM campground sits along Goodenough Creek in the Bannock Range, where cutthroat trout swim in the waters that flow past several campsites.
Sites vary considerably in character and accessibility. The developed area near the entrance features gravel pads with picnic tables and fire rings, offering level ground but limited shade during midday hours. Further into the campground, primitive sites nestle among trees closer to the creek, providing natural cooling and the sound of running water. Chris R. noted staying "in a spot that was rather private mid road up the top" and found "bathrooms were maintained and clean."
The campground connects directly to hiking and ATV trails, including routes leading toward Old Tom Mountain. Chris R. "discovered two ATV trails" and wished he had brought his ATV after seeing the opportunities. Fishing for cutthroat trout draws anglers to the creek, while the elevation provides cooler temperatures during summer heat compared to lower desert areas.
Access limitations shape the camping experience here. The steep, narrow road with erosion issues on the passenger side requires careful navigation, particularly for trailers over 30 feet. A large turnaround area past the main sites allows RVs to exit safely. During hunting season, early morning gunshots from nearby areas wake campers before dawn. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis from June through October.
For those seeking easier access with full hookups, McCammon RV Park provides a more developed alternative closer to town.
