Within Carters Recreation Area, Doll Mountain Campground sits on a peninsula extending into Carters Lake under Army Corps of Engineers management. The access road features steep hills and switchbacks that require careful navigation, particularly for larger RVs, though the campground accommodates rigs up to 55 feet. Sites occupy both sides of the main ridge road, with many positioned on decks that overlook steep draws leading down to the water.
Most campsites provide lake views, though trees partially obstruct the sightlines. The topography creates natural separation between sites, with many arranged front-to-back rather than side-by-side. Niharika S. notes "the sites are private and not on top of each other, which is nice." Campers report that quiet hours are generally respected throughout the campground. Black bears occasionally move through the area, requiring standard food storage precautions.
Electric sites marked 50A also include 30A and 15A outlets, with water and sewer hookups available. Each site includes a fire ring, charcoal grill, and picnic table. The bathhouses receive consistent praise for cleanliness and maintenance, with Matt B. describing them as "clean and well maintained, showers are hot with good pressure." A boat ramp provides direct lake access, and several sites offer trails leading down to the water for fishing or swimming.
Cell coverage varies by carrier, with AT&T providing 2-3 bars and Verizon offering 1-2 bars. No camp store operates on-site, requiring campers to stock supplies beforehand from Ellijay, about 25 minutes away. Site recommendations from reviewers include sites 9-13 for general camping, site 25 for seclusion, and site 20 for water proximity, though the latter requires a significant hike from parking.
