Off the Loop Road in Big Cypress National Preserve, Mitchell Landing Campground sits on open terrain with sites scattered between brushy areas and larger clearings. The National Park Service facility operates on a first-come, first-served basis, charging $24 per night with half-price rates for Senior and Access pass holders.
Sites include picnic tables marked with numbers, fire rings, lantern poles, and bear boxes for food storage. Vault toilets serve the campground, with campers consistently noting their cleanliness. No potable water is available on-site, requiring campers to bring their own supply or travel 30 minutes to Midway Campground for water access. The campground accommodates RVs up to 14 feet with water hookups available at some sites.
An airboat launch at the back of the campground provides access to backcountry trails in the Stairsteps section of the preserve. Reviewers mention frequent wildlife sightings, including bobcats and alligators, with fishing opportunities for peacock bass, largemouth bass, and other species nearby. Paul W. notes the area offers "the best fresh water fishing around."
Sites vary from tucked-away spots behind vegetation to more open areas near the airboat access. Peak season runs January through April with a 10-night limit, extending to 14 consecutive nights the rest of the year. Campers exploring the broader region can find campgrounds near Big Cypress National Preserve for additional options.
