MacDill AFB FamCamp

MacDill AFB FamCamp operates year-round on the military base with full hookups and cable TV included. Campers must enter through the Dale Mabry gate and use the far-right lane for RV access, as other base entrances restrict recreational vehicle entry. The facility divides into two sections: the main campground with amenities and an annex offering more spacious sites.

Sites provide electric, water, and sewer connections along with cable television. Cell service proves limited across the campground, particularly for data usage. The bath houses offer clean facilities with multiple shower stalls, while laundry machines operate for a fee with a dedicated pet linen washer available. WiFi exists but functions poorly according to multiple reports.

Winter months from October through April see heavy occupancy from seasonal visitors. "Lots of snow birds, so getting in was a challenge," notes Eleanor the Airstream R.. The campground reaches capacity during December through March, requiring advance reservations or early arrival for first-come spots. Two dog parks serve pet owners, though they remain unpaved and muddy during wet weather.

The white sand beach sits walking distance from sites, with a marina restaurant nearby. Base amenities include a large fitness center and golf course. For different camping experiences, visitors might consider camping areas near Gibsonton east of Tampa Bay.

Directions

Due to very limited times that RV's are allowed to enter the main gate (Dale Mabry gate), it's suggested to enter the Tanker Gate Way instead (closed after 1500 and closed on Sat & Sun). From I-275 (westbound), take exit 41A. Follow Dale Mabry Highway south for 6.3 miles to main gate of MacDill AFB. When approaching MacDill on Dale Mabry, take a right on Interbay and go to Tanker Way. Take a left and go through the inspection area. The guards there will direct you to the FAMCAMP. Turn around in the Marina Office parking area or park in the large lot at this left turn and walk to the office to register. If office is closed park in the corner lot and dry camp overnight. Do not occupy a camp site before registering. ---- Note: RVs cannot ENTER

Many campers appreciated the large, well-maintained sites with excellent beach access and comprehensive amenities. Some visitors expressed concerns about pricing and seasonal overcrowding, but most found the facilities and staff experience positive.

Decent stay

It’s a true large scale fam camp. Nothing fancy, lots of old geezers who take Tuesday night trivia very seriously. It’s quiet and safe. Lots of snowbirds. Laundry’s a little expensive in my opinion but tons of machines and a dedicated pet linen machine. Just a little far from much and kind of cut throat to get a spot during the snowbird months.

Utilitarian

No surprise on a military base but felt like a campground equivalent of base housing. Tight spots with full hook ups. Lots of snow birds, so getting in was a challenge. We had to show up without a reservation and take advantage of first come, first serve spots.

Full hook up (electric/water/sewer) and cable. No wifi (so weak it didn't work) and cell coverage almost non-existent (AT&T).

Close to a small beach and marina with a restaurant walking distance. Several dog parks but muddy/dirt. Laundry available for fee. Bath houses clean and large.

Good amenities on base. Gym not too far and massive.

Make sure you arrive at the base through the gate at the end of Dale Mabry, as it's the only gate campers can come thru. And be sure to go to the far right lane, even if it's got a red X showing the lane is closed. They will open the wider lane for you. You don't want to know why I know that or how close our Airstream was to the guard shacks if you don't go in the far lane!

Great Year-Round Campground

The winter season is October-April and the campground gets extremely full, going over capacity from December to February or March. Overall, an extremely large campground in two parts: main side and the annex. The annex has more space between spots, but no amenities (laundry, etc.); you have to drive to the main side for those. Not a big deal.

For long-terming, you're responsible for your yard. The FamCamp officer loans them out from the office. A pain for the annex, but still free.

Very conveniently located to the golf course and the various headquarters/units on MacDill AFB. Not as conveniently located to the rest of Tampa as it takes 12-15 minutes just to get off post from the campground.

The staff is nice when treated with respect. Have heard stories of the staff being mean or finicky, but the blame usually sounded on both parties.

AMAZING ALL AROUND !!

I can’t say enough about the MacDill operation.. everything from checkin to checkout was perfect! The tent area is large and almost 100% shaded , The white sand beach is steps away and had the most amazing sunsets . I loved everything about our stay including the patriotism of every camper there .. so nice to be among so many heros enjoying their retirement and or vacations.. Everyone is friendly and you’ll feel welcomed the second you arrive . Make sure to visit the beach bar on Friday night for tons of fun !

Can’t go wrong military base

Great location well kept. Only downside is the mosquitoes and bugs. Rainy season and doesn’t really drain or dry up very well. The beach is los and boat rental and store close.

Beautiful Campground

I absolutely loved the MacDill FamCamp. It’s right by the beach and marina. There’s a small dog beach and two dog parks. Laundry facilities are centrally located. Cable is included. I recommend bringing a Verizon hotspot or stopping at spectrum and getting a WiFi plan. cellular service is not great, especially for data.
