Guests frequently mentioned the stunning mountain vistas and large, well-spaced sites with recent improvements to cleanliness and organization. Some visitors reported highway noise, but most found peaceful spots. The rough access road requires careful driving.

Unexpected in so many beautiful ways

This location is an absolute gem to those seeking a slow pace while gazing at 360 majestic mountain and canyon views.

The number of sites available is the greatest I’ve been to and some of the best groomed.

Some higher sites are accessible with 4x4 only so don’t venture up if you’re not equipped to overcome the deep potholes and gashes in the dirt, most of which comes with tons of rocks.

I was there during the week and only saw/heard maybe 5 other campers but none were anywhere near me; that’s how big the area is, and I loved it.

Nighttime dipped to 24 degrees so be prepared in the spring as well, esp if no fires are possible since it often gets very windy up there.

Lots of Space + Lots of Views

Three loops of camping to explore. Each one with incredible views of the valley and/or mountains. Primitive dispersed camping at its best. Bumpy road in but just take it slow.

Shavano

Sites are spaced better than at Burmac. You can still hear the highway, but I think it’s the just the valley, I can’t see it.

Lovely!

So this area got busy on a Friday night so we drove back pretty far to get a spot. It was also midnight so we was late. There’s three areas. A,B, and C loop. Rock fire pits and it was quiet and the stars was wild. And bugs wasn’t as bad as other places.

Excellent spot near Salida.

I stayed here 4 years ago and didn't leave a review because it was a mess. However they have made major improvements since then. All the trash has been cleaned up, the roads are all well marked as well as the campsites. So much better than the last time I was here. I would for sure recommend it. I brought a small 20 foot RV. Pulled by a 2 wheel drive tundra. The road in is a little bit rough but I had no trouble. Slow and steady. Once you get up the entrance it is easy driving.

Great spot!

Great spot to pitch the tent for the night. Relatively easy to drive into, I stayed on the C loop and had some great views. Very windy all evening and night but oh well. Would recommend

Amazing vistas

Amazing vistas! Big private sites. Tough road that gets progressively technical as you go farther up towards trail head.

Perfect BLM camping

Great views of the mountains and some site you get to see the city below. Verizon I have 2 bars of 5g. Cows are grazing, they’re great but leash up pets. Perfect spot if you want to camp and explore the local area. 80 degrees with most sites offering shade from trees. Road can’t get difficult for cars at one spot. Easier to travel during day
