Heavily wooded sites with tall conifers and aspen trees characterize this dispersed camping area in the Uncompahgre National Forest. Gray Copper Gulch provides drive-in access along a winding road, though reaching the better sites higher up requires four-wheel drive and high clearance for a low stream crossing. Cell phone reception remains unreliable throughout the area.
The road eventually transitions to ATV-only terrain, bringing occasional noise from off-road vehicles passing through. Campers gain direct access to Gray Copper Trail from the camping area, with the trail offering increasingly rewarding views at higher elevations. The Forest Service allows both pets and alcohol at this paid camping location, making it suitable for groups wanting dispersed camping with some vehicle access near camping spots near Ouray.
